Wil (Japanese: ウィル Will) is an archer who appears in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. He is generally quite cheerful and friendly.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Lyn's tale

Wil first appears in Chapter 3. When Lyn visits a small village, the townspeople first shout at her to go away, mistaking her for one of the bandits. However, Wil goes out of the town to find out what is happening. Lyn tells him about the attacking bandits, ordering him to warn the village. However, he asks if he can join her, and she accepts. He joins the group as an archer.

At the end of the chapter, he suggests that their new group be called "Lyndis's Legion". Although this name does not stick, he stays with Lyn after the struggle is over. He joins the ranks of Caelin's military.

Eliwood/Hector's tale

Wil first appears in Noble Lady of Caelin, Chapter 15 of Eliwood's story and Chapter 16 of Hector's story, along with Lyn, Sain, Kent, and Florina. The group is stuck outside of Castle Caelin when forces from Laus attack, and the group is worried about Marquess Hausen's safety. Florina flies over to get help from Eliwood and Hector's army, and joins them while Wil and the others are still in the woods. The two groups are able to join together, and Wil fights with the army for the rest of the game.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Wil is one of the characters that fulfills the Gordin archetype, the other being Rebecca. Typical to the Gordin archetype, Wil starts off quite weak. Wil does have the benefit of joining in Lyn’s tale but even then he cannot one round anyone in his recruitment chapter or even double the boss, who has a speed stat of two. His performance does not get any better unless you play Lyn’s tale very slowly or feed the boss kills to him. Since Wil has little to no ability to defeat units on his own in the early game, Wil is completely reliant on kills set up for him or one-shotting enemy pegasus knights, which he cannot do due to the x2 weapon effectiveness bonus in this game. The only units he can consistently take out in the early game are Steel Lance equipped Pegasus Knights with 0 AS, other than that he can only provide decent chip damage. Wil also has the problem all archers have: a terrible enemy phase. Since he can only retaliate units using weapons at two range he can only battle so many units per enemy phase and many of the enemy units will have to be prevented from attacking Wil at melee-range. On average, Wil will most likely cap strength at 25, but the player will have to promote him at level 20 and then raise him to level 19 as a sniper, a feat even the most dedicated player will most likely not achieve outside of normal mode or without arena abusing.

Comparison to Rebecca

Wil has a better base HP, defense, and strength growth than Rebecca so he has more tanking potential, whereas Rebecca is faster and has more resistance and will be more reliant on dodging enemy hits. Wil also has a higher constitution than Rebecca, though this hardly matters since Wil will struggle to double the vast majority of enemy units. Despite the differences in their growth rates, both struggle to secure kills in the early game and fail to provide a unique niche as the game continues.

Comparison to Rath

Rath and Wil have very similar growth rates, in fact they have the same strength growth rate. The main difference being Rath has a slightly higher speed growth and and a lower defense growth.Even if Rath does not see battle too frequently, he can still provide incredible utility since Rath also has the benefit of having a mount and an aid stat of 18, enabling him to rescue drop every unit in the game. Wil’s ability to rescue is comparatively very limited. Additionally, Rath is recruited at level 9 in Eliwood/Hector’s tale, meaning he is only one level away from promotion and obtaining the ability to use swords. Therefore, Rath is the better unit. The player does not need to tolerate poor stats as long as they would have to with Wil and can circumvent the issues archers have with enemy phase by trading a sword onto Rath after a battle.

Personality and character

Wil is a happy, casual person who easily gets along with others around him. He is cheerful most of the time, and tries hard to make conversation even with quiet companions, such as Rath[2] and Raven.[3] He is very talkative, but always well-meaning. However, he can still be serious about matters, such as when he candidly tells Rebecca he will stay for her.[4] According to Kent, his superior in the military ranks, Wil is very motivated to succeed.[5] He is willing to try new things, such as learning how to ride on horseback in his A support with Rath.[6] Overall, Wil's lighthearted disposition rarely falters, although he can be serious when he needs to be.

Wil's background mainly centers around his running away from home. He lived in a small Pheraean village, close to the castle, where he was a neighbor to Rebecca.[7] However, he ran away from home with his friend Dan five years ago, hoping to become rich. But his friend headed back home, and he was alone. Afterwards, he continued traveling as far as Bern.[8] Having failed to accomplish anything and too ashamed to return home, his money was stolen and he traveled to a village in Taliver Mountain.[9] He then met Lyn in the village, and joined her after the events of Chapter 3.

Wil travels with Lyn and helps her to defeat Lundgren, and joins the ranks of the Caelin army. He then joins Eliwood and Hector's army in Chapter 15 or 16, Noble Lady of Caelin. During the game, if he supports with Lyn, she tells him to write a letter home and to visit his parents after the war, and he complies.[10] If he attains an A support level with Rebecca, he will become the father of Wolt of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade.
