— Syrene talking about Vanessa in her A support

Vanessa (Japanese: ヴァネッサ Vanessa) is a pegasus knight who appears in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. She hails from Frelia, and is the younger sister of Syrene. She is quite loyal to her country, and harbors a crush on her prince, Innes.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Role

Vanessa first appears in Chapter 1, in which Eirika arrives in Frelia. Although Hayden cannot spare many soldiers to help her, he gives her three of his trusted vassals—Vanessa, Moulder, and Gilliam. From this point on she continues to serve Eirika with loyalty.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Vanessa is a level 1 Pegasus Knight who joins in Chapter 2. Vanessa is the only flier available until Tana in Chapter 9, and is the only unit capable of providing flying utility until then. As a flier, Vanessa can ignore most terrain, and can rescue most units to carry them over such terrain; For example, in Chapter 2, she can rescue Ross to bring him to Eirika over the mountain range, and can visit the Pure Water village in the bottom left corner of the map.

Vanessa has high base speed and decent base strength, which allows her to contribute in combat early. The low quality of enemies in The Sacred Stones allows her to gain experience through combat quickly. However, Vanessa does not have particularly high HP or defense and cannot usually withstand multiple attacks; bow-users will deal effective damage and will typically be able to kill her in one shot, though her bow weakness can be negated with the Fili Shield.

As a Pegasus Knight, Vanessa promotes with an Elysian Whip, the first of which can be obtained in Chapter 8, by which time Vanessa can reliably reach level 10. Promoting Vanessa does not come at the expense of other fliers, as Cormag has an Elysian Whip in his inventory, and they can be obtained in a Secret Shop in Chapter 14.

Vanessa has the option to promote to Falcon Knight or Wyvern Knight. While Falcon Knight gives Vanessa access to E rank swords and has better defensive stats, Wyvern Knight improves her constitution by 4 instead of 1, improving her attack speed in more cases. Vanessa's base constitution is very low, and she will be weighed down by most weapons, particularly lances; promoting her to Wyvern Knight mitigates the problem. Wyvern Knight also grants Vanessa the Pierce skill, which gives her a chance to make an attack which ignores the enemy's defense.

Personality and character

Vanessa is a sincere, serious girl. She does her best when fighting, but according to Syrene she is too serious. She is slightly shy, and has a crush on Prince Innes. She envies her older sister Syrene, because she thinks that Syrene is better all around, showing that Vanessa seems to have little self-confidence. However, according to Syrene, she has a great deal of "inner fortitude". Although she acts serious, when talking, she seems to relax and be able to act less nervous. According to Forde, her "energy" is warm and refreshing.

Not much is known about her life. She was the first to act when her father fell ill. When her mother and Syrene didn't know what to do, Vanessa gathered nuts, sold them in the market, and bought medicine, saving her father. Her and Syrene's parents are most likely still alive, since Syrene received the war gold Fale's amulet from her father right before Vanessa left, and her mother was present as well. Vanessa seems to be rather high in the ranks of Frelia, since she attended King Hayden's birthday ceremony and saw Innes's archery. Also, Innes still remembers that when Vanessa just joined the pegasus knights, she was only a girl, according to Innes.

Endings

Vanessa, Dutiful Rider
She remained on active duty as an airborne knight in Frelia's army. Her beauty and determination became the standard to which her fellow knights aspired.

Innes and Vanessa
At Innes's request, Vanessa moved into Castle Frelia where she continued her duties as a knight of the realm. Thereafter, they had a child and lived happily with the blessing of all around them.

Forde and Vanessa
Forde's love for Vanessa grew after the war, and although she loved him as well, she placed her duty to Frelia first. Undeterred, Forde moved to Frelia himself. Over time, the two were wed.

Syrene and Vanessa
Sisters Syrene and Vanessa returned to Frelia after the war for a long-overdue talk. They talked of love and war, of friends now gone. Together, they renewed their bond as siblings and vowed never to let that bond fail.

Trivia

  • Despite the fact that Tana and Vanessa can perform the Triangle Attack together (along with Syrene, who happens to be able to have a support with Tana), Tana and Vanessa cannot support with each other.
  • Her pegasus is named Titania, coincidentally the same English as Titania, a character in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, though their names differ in the Japanese version.
