In the Silver Snow route, there's evidence any Black Eagle student who had fallen during Part I on Classic Mode would've been able to defect and return as an enemy in Part II at one point in development (with Bernadetta going missing instead, as no chapter during the route is coded to feature her). For starters, in Silver Snow's Chapter 13, Edelgard will claim some of her former classmates joined her side after the timeskip if any Black Eagle happened to meet the previously described criteria. Moreover, not only the Black Eagles are coded to replace generic Imperial Generals during specific chapters if the game considers them unrecruited, the event "The Death Knight" for Silver Snow also contains an unused scenario in which both Caspar and Linhardt would've appeared next to the Death Knight if left unrecruited, similar to Azure Moon and Verdant Wind. | |||

Revision as of 22:57, 17 April 2021
Numerous pieces of unused content have been found within the game data of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Text
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
Early tutorial text
There is unused tutorial text in the game, describing an earlier version of the monastery and its mechanics. Some of the terms used are different than those in the final game. It is probably for a demo version of the game.
Along with the Japanese text, there is fully translated text for English, German, Portuguese, and Italian. However, the French and Spanish translations of this text are unfinished and partially in English. The Spanish translation is almost complete, while the French translation is only about half done.
The following is the English text:
|
These are followed by several instances of "Sothis Message #", # being 26 through 150. Each number is used twice in a row.
Cut group tasks
Leftover text indicates there were plans for 3 more Group Tasks in the game which were never implemented. None of them specify which skills they would have enhanced.

Trade destinations
There exists in the games files unused flavor text and UI elements relating to "trade destinations", potentially indicating that the traders around the monastery could be sent to specific locations and return with particular items. This text uses early forms of some names, and also references the location of Kupala, which was not mentioned in the game prior to the final wave of DLC. This text was removed from the files of every language in v1.0.2.
- Note: any and all typos and incongruent names are as-written in the game's files.

In Verdant Wind Chapter 17's exploration, Hilda, Raphael, and Marianne have unused dialogue where they reminisce and mourn Lorenz after having killed him in the previous story mission, an scenario which is impossible through normal means as Lorenz cannot defect during the Verdant Wind route.[10]

Unused Event Scenarios
Silver Snow: Enemy Caspar and Linhardt in Fort Merceus
The Silver Snow Event "The Death Knight" has a trigger for dialogue from Caspar and Linhardt if they are unrecruited, similar to the Azure Moon and Verdant Wind counterparts of this event. Unused Death Quotes
Playable Hubert & Gilbert (Part II)
Hubert and Gilbert have death quotes as playable characters during the War Phase, which cannot be seen normally as the Crimson Flower and Azure Moon routes render both undeployable instead should their HP reach zero, likely as a result of both characters being vital to their respective stories.[16][17]

Unused Lecture Questions
Gilbert has a written lecture question set for the Academy Phase, which goes unused as he only joins during the War Phase of the Azure Moon route. Likewise, despite Jeritza being the only unit not to ask questions during a lecture, he has placeholder dialogue for one and even responses.[22][23]

Unused Part I Personal History
Both Gilbert and Jeritza (version 1.1.0 onwards) have Personal History written for their profiles in Part I. Through normal means, it is impossible to see it without hacking as both characters become playable only during Part II on the Azure Moon and Crimson Flower routes respectively.

Unused Endings
There are a few unused endings in the game's script. First, a solo ending exists for Gilbert on the Blue Lions route should he be defeated during Part I in Classic Mode, which cannot be seen normally as he joins only in Part II. Second, a paired ending for Byleth and Hilda exists in the game's data; this ending was intended for use on the Crimson Flower route, but, as Hilda cannot be recruited in the Black Eagles route unless the player sides with the Church of Seiros, it cannot be seen in the final game. Finally, a placeholder ending string exists for paired endings.

Almost immediately after Byleth and Hilda finished their gorgeous wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. They fought tirelessly to bring lasting peace to Fódlan, and afterward retired from the Imperial army to Goneril territory. Hilda's hobby of creating fashionable accessories bore fruit, and she leveraged her husband's reputation as a hero to create the first artisan academy in Fódlan. The school produced many talented craftsmen, one of whom created a statue that expertly captured the hero's delight at receiving the gift of a bracelet from his wife. |

Gameplay changes
Prior to the 1.0.2 update, there was unused data pertaining to the Maddening difficulty hidden in the game files, suggesting it was in development earlier, but needed to be polished before release.[24] Similarly, there is also a scrapped Infernal difficulty in the game's data which is largely unfinished, and would've featured stronger enemies to the ones seen in Maddening.[25]

Graphics
Map sprites
Several characters have sets of personalized map sprites for their playable appearance in Part II left unused in the finished game as they use generic map sprites instead. | |
Hanneman has unused map sprites depicting him as a Warlock. While he has access to those classes in the finished game, he only uses generic map sprites. | |
Jeralt also has map sprites depicting him as a Commoner and a playable Paladin despite only appearing as a NPC Paladin. | |
The Flame Emperor, enemy Death Knight and King of Liberation classes have maps sprites for playable versions despite being enemy/NPC-exclusive. This goes in line with recent Fire Emblem games as they feature by default pre-colored class sprites for every possible allegiance rather than reusing one set of sprites that is recolored during gameplay. | |
Dimitri and Rhea have unique map sprites depicting them as enemies in the Great Lord and Saint classes respectively for the Crimson Flower route; in-game, Dimitri uses the same set of sprites he uses on all other routes while Rhea uses the Archbishop sprite for said class. | |
Class sprites for generic NPCs with the Dancer class can be found among the other sprites. Interestingly, even though male and female sprites exist, only the latter have portrait graphics to match in the game's files. | |
The Wave 4 DLC added sprites for generic NPC characters using the Trickster, War Monk & Cleric, Valkyrie and Dark Flier Classes. As only NPC male Trickster and Valkyries are used, the sprites for the female Trickster, War Monk, War Cleric and Dark Flier go unused. |
Icons
Among the many banners used to indicate unit affiliations lies the flag used by Miklan and his thieves, which goes unused as his army uses the generic enemy icon instead. | |
Several Battalions item sprite are left unused due to no Battalion using them. | |
Several Items sprites variants are left unused due to no item being assigned to the belonging category, primarily Agarthan variants. | |
Item sprites variant also exist for white magic, black magic and dark magic spells despite none of them being used. | |
Sprites used to denote a monster's weakness also exist for brawling, white magic, black magic and dark magic spells despite none of them being used. | |
Three icons meant for skills exist within the game's files, which are never displayed by any skill—both used and unused—in the game. | |
Sprites meant to denote 4 and 5 levels of battalion endurance can be found among other sprites. In the final release, all battalions have a maximum level endurance of 3. | |
There are also 2 icons meant for unique type of items which are ultimately left unused. | |
A button with a camera icon can be found among the sprites shown during battle animations. | |
Among the monastery UI graphics lie these 2 icons whose purpose is unknown. |
Portraits
Like previous games, Three Houses has a blank placeholder portrait. The small version of the portrait is used in-game by active Viskam in Zoom View. | |
File:Small portrait dedue 02 fe16 unused.png | A portrait of a livid Dedue meant for the War Phase. In-game, the character can use this expression only once and during the Academy Phase, rendering this variation unused. |
The Wave 4 DLC added portraits for the generic NPC Trickster, War Monk/Cleric, Valkyrie and Dark Flier classes, some of which cannot be seen in normal gameplay as no NPC character ever uses them. |
S-support illustrations
Seteth, Flayn, Catherine and Cyril each have a variation of their S-support illustrations depicting Byleth with darker hair, as seen at the end of the Crimson Flower route; the illustrations are left unused as Flayn leaves the party and the other characters cannot be recruited in Crimson Flower.
Part II Murals
Part II illustrations for the Horsebow, Wyvern, Red Wolf and Ethereal Moon murals are also left unused, given three of these months are never visited in any route during part II and Ethereal Moon uses an unique new mural for the War Phase instead.

Crests
There are two unused Crests in the game's code.
Icon | Crest name | Effect | Activation | Description | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
N/A | Crest of the Forge | ?? | ?? | A blacksmith's Crest. Can be attached to forged weapons. | Possibly meant to let enemies use forged weapons; though it is currently unknown if it retains some functionality, all forged weapons in the game are tagged to be compatible with this Crest. |

More defecting Black Eagles on Silver Snow
In the Silver Snow route, there's evidence any Black Eagle student who had fallen during Part I on Classic Mode would've been able to defect and return as an enemy in Part II at one point in development (with Bernadetta going missing instead, as no chapter during the route is coded to feature her). For starters, in Silver Snow's Chapter 13, Edelgard will claim some of her former classmates joined her side after the timeskip if any Black Eagle happened to meet the previously described criteria.[26] Moreover, not only the Black Eagles are coded to replace generic Imperial Generals during specific chapters if the game considers them unrecruited[27], the event "The Death Knight" for Silver Snow also contains an unused scenario in which both Caspar and Linhardt would've appeared next to the Death Knight if left unrecruited, similar to Azure Moon and Verdant Wind.
Unused Monastery Quest Voice Clips
Monica, Fleche, Judith, Rodrigue, Tomas, Ladislava and Sothis have unused voiced lines for monastery quests, suggesting all seven characters were meant to have more interactivity during monastery exploration at one point in development.
Unused NPC Battle Voice Clips
Voice clips for generic and important NPCs triggering a Gambit Boost exist in the game's files, a feature which is normally only available for playable units. Likewise, all generic and important NPCs have voiced death screams, including characters like Miklan and Kronya whose voice clips are never used in the game proper.
Byleth Orders to Spare/Kill?
In situations where the game offers the option of killing or sparing/persuading some characters, there also exist unused text in which Byleth orders the army through in-game dialogue to follow the picked choice. The scrapped dialogue is the most complete structure-wise when deciding Claude's fate in the Crimson Flower route, as Byleth is set to say "We must kill him" or "We must let him go" depending on the prompt chosen. Meanwhile, in Ashe, Lorenz and Lysithea's cases, Byleth simply repeats the text used by the choice prompt in their dialogue box instead.
Placeholder Event Data
There are 26 slots with placeholder event data in the game which are for the most part empty. The first ten are located between the Crimson Flower events and Paralogue-exclusive events, while the rest are located between the Paralogue events and those used for the Cindered Shadows DLC storyline.
Placeholder Monastery Exploration Data
Multiple unused slots for monastery exploration script exist within Three Houses. Between the Silver Snow and Azure Moon routes, there is one empty slot with no data, and after Verdant Wind's exploration data, there are 38 placeholder slots. Interestingly, one of them contains recycled conversations with Hanneman, Manuela and Tomas from Chapter 1 before one of the titular Three Houses are chosen.[28]
Unused Recruitment Requirements
The Ashen Wolves and Anna contain in the game's data recruitment requirements similar to the ones needed by other recruitable characters; in-game, the Ashen Wolves' availability for recruitement depends only on the completion of specific chapters of Cindered Shadows, and Anna has no requirements for recruitment.

Playable Sothis, Jeralt, and Rhea data
Sothis, Jeralt, and Rhea each have fully programmed base stats, growth rates, and stat caps, as well combat, critical hit and level up quotes for when they are being deployed during battle,[34] with Jeralt in particular also having a second set of victory and critical hit quotes;[35] Jeralt and Rhea both have programmed spell lists, but Sothis does not. Jeralt and Rhea also have data for Tea Party, though Rhea's was implemented in version 1.2.0 of the game, which added a Quest in Chapter 5 that allows the player to invite her to a Tea Party.

Unused DLC character
The v1.1.0 update for Three Houses, besides making Anna and Jeritza playable and adding preliminary data for the Ashen Wolves and Aelfric, added a new unknown character which was never properly finished. Unused data reveals said character is a 17 year old girl with the Commoner class, her birthday is January 1, her base stats and growths are identical to Ferdinand, and she uses voice clips that are absent in the final update; no name was ever set. Some of her data changed throughout updates; in version 1.1.0, she was affiliated with the Adrestian Empire and had a Minor Crest of Cichol; in version 1.2.0, her affiliation changed to the Church of Seiros and her Crest changed into a Major Crest of Flames.[36]
Unused Agarthan
There exists an unused member of those who slither in the dark called Cleobulus (Japanese: クレオブロス Cleobulus) in the character's data. They use a placeholder portrait, have the Warlock class, and bear Agarthan Technology as their personal ability like most important members.[37] Their location in the data suggests they would have been fought in Silver Snow Chapter 20/

Linked Attacks
In the game's code, Bernadetta and Dorothea have Linked Attack bonuses with Marianne and Hilda respectively. In the final game, the pairs are unable to gain any stat bonuses when paired together as they cannot support with each other.

Unused Gronder Field and Fort Merceus (War Phase)

There are unused variations for both To War at Gronder and Taking Fort Merceus, seemingly meant for a potential Chapter 17 and 18 respectively, and both of their beginning logs are shared with the used variations of these missions, with the Fort Merceus map particularly reusing the log from the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes.[39][40] The maps have identical spawn data, consisting only of a few generic NPCs for the Black Eagles version while the other routes were left empty.[41]
