Introduction

After Roy meets Niime the Hermit, some light is shed on Bern's dragons. With many questions still left unanswered, Roy directs his troops towards a large manor on the edge of Bulgar. Here, High Chancellor Roartz prepares his defenses for his last stand...

Opening

(In the manor's center room)

Roartz: The worthless fools outside failed! The enemy is in the mansion! Blast it! If I die I'm taking that Roy down with me!
Soldier: Lord Roartz! The remnants of the Djute say they'll come to our aid after they hide Mulagir.
Roartz: Mulagir? Ah, one of the legendary weapons. Good. Then we must simply hold out until then.

(At the front of the manor)

Roy: This is Roartz's manor...
Niime: This mansion's framework is big enough to hide troops and ballistae. You won't be safe with your back up against the wall.
Roy: Do you know much about this place?
Niime: Probably more than most, anyway. That's what I'm known for. I picked up that bit of information back in the city.
Roy: ...Do you know what the demon dragon looks like?
Niime: I can't say that I do. Still, I would relish the opportunity to see it with my own eyes.
Roy: I've been wondering... Do you think the demon dragon is in human form as well?
Niime: It seems probable. It could be that all dragons in this realm are in human form. I've even heard stories of dragons in human form living with people.
Roy: Arcadia...
Niime: Hm? What did you say?
Roy: Er, nothing.
Niime: I've read that dragons only began to take human form after the Ending Winter.
Roy: The Ending Winter...
Niime: I expect you've heard of it.
Roy: Yes, but only in legend. I learned that in the Ending Winter, the laws of nature were all warped. Day became night, and summer became winter.
Niime: That's it. The scrolls I read on the topic are so timeworn that I couldn't decipher all of them. But one thing is clear. The Ending Winter was a disaster powerful enough to bend and twist the whole planet.
Roy: What caused it?
Niime: Nobody knows for certain... Legend says the dragons caused it by releasing vast amounts of magical power, but even this theory lacks evidence. In any case, it is certain that dragons began to take human form after the Ending Winter. I don't believe these two occurrences are coincidence.
Roy: I agree.
Niime: Ultimately, the truth lies in Bern.

In battle

At the start of turn 2, NPC phase

(Dayan appears from the south)

Dayan: The manor is in chaos. Now is my chance. I will take down Bern's troops on my own!

At the start of turn 10, enemy phase

(Cath appears from the stairs in the center room)

Cath: Soooo... Bulgar, huh? The biggest city in Sacae. I heard it was sacked by Bern. Look at all the soldiers... I'm sure there are plenty of goodies just waiting to be swiped.

At the start of turn 26, player phase

(Thoril, Brakul, Kudoka and Marral appear from the south)

Thoril: Pigs from Etruria...! I will avenge the Djute right here, right now!

Talk conversations

Roy talks to Dayan

Dayan: Are you the general of the Etrurian Army?
Roy: I am. And you are?
Dayan: I am Dayan?
Roy: Dayan...? I feel I've heard the name...
Dayan: First, allow me to thank you. My clan has been fighting against Bern and their followers. We haven't a chance against them head on, so we've resorted to guerrilla tactics. Since your arrival, however, the odds are tipping in our favor.
Roy: I am glad that I could help.
Dayan: That said, I wish to ask you one thing. Once this battle is over, I request that you withdraw.
Roy: After this battle?
Dayan: Sacae belongs to the Sacaens. If Bern's iron-fisted rule is only to be replaced by Etruria's, then you will leave us no choice but to fight against you.
Roy: I'm sorry... I cannot comply with that request. We must base ourselves in Sacae to launch our direct attack on Bern.
Dayan: You... plan to attack Bern directly?
Roy: Even if we push Bern back now, it's only a matter of time until they strike back. We must bring the fight to their heartland to stop this war. Do you not agree?
Dayan: Yes, I do. I see... In that case, I shall join you.
Roy: That would help tremendously.
Dayan: But once Bern is defeated, you must withdraw your troops from Sacae. Do I have your word?
Roy: Of course. I swear it.

(Dayan joins the army)

Roy talks to Cath

(If they are talking for the first time)

Roy: Hey! You're...
Cath: Oops...
Roy: Wait!
Cath: Hey, cut it out! Let go of my arm! Ow! That hurts!
Roy: Oh, I'm sorry. But what are you doing here?
Cath: Well, uh, you know, this and that. I'm a busy girl. Ha ha ha...
Roy: Here? On a battlefield?
Cath: Oh yes, precisely BECAUSE this is a battlefield- Whoops, better watch my tongue...
Roy: Do you have some ulterior motive?
Cath: Uh...
Roy: Wait, is that why you told us the escape route?
Cath: Um, what? Sorry, I'm a little deaf in this ear!
Roy: Just who are you?
Cath: Don't worry about it! Forget you saw me. Gotta go. Cheers!
Roy: Hey, wait!

(After this conversation, Cath's AI changes; she starts escaping the map instead of opening doors and pilfering loot. However, she remains an enemy)

(If they are talking for the second time)

Roy: It's you!
Cath: Ugh, you again... Er, fancy meeting you here! Ha ha ha...
Roy: ...You're a thief. You shouldn't steal. It's not right.
Cath: Nah, it's fine. I only take from the rich. No one's going to starve or anything.
Roy: That doesn't make it any better.
Cath: Oh really? Then let me offer you this. You nobles take food and money from people living in what you call your land. How is tax collection any different than tribute to a bandit?
Roy: We protect the people in return!
Cath: You do not! You kill them in wars like this!
Roy: We didn't start this war. Bern invaded, so we have to defend the people...
Cath: You can't just do anything you want and say you're defending us! How does burning down villages help us anyway?!
Roy: Burning down villages?! We never-! Wait a minute, was your...?
Cath: ...My village was burned to the ground by our marquess. He said that he had to do it to prepare for Bern's attack.
Roy: But... that's...
Cath: We always had barely enough to get by, and then we lost everything... Our homes... Our crops... And here you come, saying it's wrong to steal? Ha! Look who's talking! The nobility steals from the poor so you can live in luxury at our expense!
Roy: I... I don't know what to say.
Cath: Sigh. Don't get gloomy. I really don't like talking about how pitiful we are anyway. But you started it.
Roy: I...
Cath: Ah, to heck with this. It's no fun stealing after a conversation like that. I'm outta here. Ta-ta!
Roy: ......

(After either conversation, Cath's AI changes; she starts escaping the map instead of opening doors and pilfering loot. However, she remains an enemy)

(If they are talking for the third time)

Roy: Oh! You!
Cath: Hm? ...You again? You always come and mess up my plans. Do you have it out for me or something?
Roy: No! I just... wanted to apologize.
Cath: ...Excuse me?
Roy: The last time we met, I was pretty callous. I said you shouldn't steal, but I didn't even realize what you'd been through...
Cath: Oh, that? Whatever. I don't care.
Roy: But I still think what you do is wrong.
Cath: You've got some nerve, you know that?
Roy: Just give me a chance.
Cath: A chance?
Roy: Once this war is over, I promise to help rebuild your village. I'll be sure the taxes are put to good use, too. Just please, stop looting.
Cath: ......
Cath: How long will that be?
Roy: Whenever this war ends. I can't say when...
Cath: And you expect me to wait patiently until then?
Roy: No. All I want is your faith.
Cath: ...Why are you so kind to me? I'm just a thief.
Roy: Without you, we wouldn't have escaped Wagner's trap. Maybe you didn't care about helping us, but the fact is that you did. You saved our lives. You're more than just a thief.
Cath: If things keep going like they have... I guess you'll get in my way no matter where I go.
Roy: As long as you appear in our path.
Cath: Fine, you win. I'll stop looting battlefields.
Roy: You will? Thank you.
Cath: But I'm coming with you.
Roy: What? Why?
Cath: Actions speak louder than words. Prove to me that you'll be true to your promise.
Roy: I won't disappoint you!

(Cath joins the army)

Sin talks to Dayan

Sin: Chieftain!
Dayan: Sin, you've returned! Now you can join our fight...
Sin: But Chieftain... I am currently in service to this army.
Dayan: ...Do you mean the Etrurian Army?
Sin: Yes.
Dayan: ......
Sin: This army will not invade Sacae. Will you lend us your skills?
Dayan: Very well. I trust your word. I will fight with you.

(Dayan joins the army)

Sue talks to Dayan

Sue: Grandfather...
Dayan: Sue?! You are unharmed?
Sue: Thanks to this army, yes. But I was the only one of our clansmen to survive...
Dayan: I see... You've been through so much.
Sue: Grandfather, come with us. This army will not invade Sacae.
Dayan: ...Are you certain?
Sue: As certain as the Sky is blue and the Earth is green.
Dayan: Very well. I trust your word.

(Dayan joins the army)

Dayan and Sin after Dayan is recruited

Sin: Chieftain!
Dayan: Sin, you've returned! We fight together again...
Sin: Chieftain... Have you joined this army?
Dayan: I have indeed. I don't believe they intend to take Sacae from us. What do you think of them?
Sin: I agree. They mean well.
Dayan: Good. Then we fight together.
Sin: Yes, Chieftain.

Dayan and Sue after Dayan is recruited

Sue: Grandfather...
Dayan: Sue?! You are unharmed?
Sue: Thanks to this army, yes. But I was the only one of our clansmen to survive...
Dayan: I see... You've been through so much.
Sue: Grandfather, do you fight with us?
Dayan: Yes, I have joined this group. I don't believe that this army will try to take Sacae from us.
Sue: I agree...

Battle quotes

Roartz enters combat

Roartz: S-someone! Come to my aid! All is lost if I fall!

Roartz enters combat with Douglas

Roartz: Douglas... Hmph! After all that you said, you've gone back on your honor!
Douglas: Indeed it may appear that way. But I fight true. I fight with my heart and I have confidence in our cause.
Roartz: Enough of your nonsensical rambling. Die here!

Roartz dies

Roartz: W-wait... Serve me! It is not too late... I shall... absolve you of your crimes... Guh...!

Ending

If Dayan, Sin, and Sue are all recruited and alive and the chapter was completed in less than 25 turns

Roy: Next is Bern...
Merlinus: Lord Roy! We have reports that remnants of the Djute are hiding in some nearby ruins.
Roy: Ruins?
Merlinus: Yes, and a captive tells us there's a bow there that was used in the Scouring.
Roy: What? Then...
Merlinus: It's likely that it's a legendary weapon.
Roy: We must get to those ruins! Let's go!

If Dayan, Sin, or Sue were killed or the chapter exceeded 25 turns

Roy: Merlinus, I need you to send this letter to Father Yoder in Etruria.
Merlinus: A letter? May I ask what it says?
Roy: It has the information I learned from Niime about the dragons.
Merlinus: Oh? What did you learn?
Roy: It would take too long to tell you. I haven't sealed the letter yet, so you can look through it if you like.
Merlinus: Very well. I think I will...

(Merlinus leaves, Guinivere enters)

Guinivere: ...Roy.
Roy: Princess?
Guinivere: ...We will enter Bern now.
Roy: Yes, the attack on Bern will commence soon. May I... ask the rest of the story now?
Guinivere: ...That is why I came to you.
Roy: You said King Zephiel was an outstanding pupil in everything he did... It sounds like he would have been an ideal heir to the throne.
Guinivere: Yes, I have no doubt.
Roy: But still your father never looked kindly at him.
Guinivere: In truth... our father began to despite Zephiel precisely because of his talent.
Roy: Why... would a father resent his own son's talent?
Guinivere: Our father was a man of unextraordinary skill and intellect. Zephiel's outstanding talents made our father colder towards him.
Roy: He was envious...?
Guinivere: He went as far as to tell Zephiel that he would never inherit Bern. He said that instead, the throne would go to my future husband.
Roy: His own father told him that?! What a heartless man!
Guinivere: But Zephiel held strong. He always said he never cared about inheriting the throne. But the people of Bern knew of Zephiel's genius and wanted him king. Pressured by the public, our father lost his patience at last...
Roy: That's when he decided to kill Zephiel...?
Guinivere: Our father gave Zephiel a goblet full of a poisoned drink at a banquet. That was the first and last time Zephiel ever accepted a drink from our father. After returning to his room, Zephiel began to fall dreadfully ill. For ten days and nights, Zephiel lingered between life and death. But Murdock, Zephiel's teacher and loyal general, saved his life.
Roy: ...The old king made no further attempts on his life?
Guinivere: No. At least, not to completion... I have heard that he schemed to have Murdock and Zephiel's mother killed. He was scheming to murder everyone connected to Zephiel. Upon learning of our father's intentions, Zephiel feigned death. At his funeral service, our father leaned over the coffin to view Zephiel's body. It was at that moment that Zephiel sprung from the coffin and... sword in hand...
Roy: ......
Guinivere: I was but a child then, so naturally I could not understand what was going on. All I knew at the time is that our father died, and Zephiel never smiled again. Before then, he was stern at times, but always a kind and loving brother. But after everything that happened...
Roy: Princess...
Guinivere: I knew that someday I may have to act against him.
Roy: I... see...
Guinivere: ...Zephiel is so far-gone now. He will never listen to anything I say. Roy, please... You must stop him. Stop him from destroying Bern and from destroying Elibe.
Roy: Such a feat will likely require my blade. Can you still ask such a thing of me?
Guinivere: ...I trust your judgement. Do what you must.
Roy: You have my word, Princess Guinivere. I swear by the Fire Emblem that I will stop King Zephiel!
