Kate is one of the first playable characters available. Her mission is to escort princess Sasha of Wellt to safety. She and the princess are pursued by Russ, and underling of Codha. After being rescued by Runan during the events of Map 1 she and Sasha join his forces to get rid of the traitorous Codha.

After the battle at the Mars Temple during Map 5, Kate strikes up conversation with the newly recruited Zeek, a knight that defected from Guenchaos's forces. She mentions that Raffin, another knight from Barge, was not familiar with Zeek. Zeek replies that he simply never met Raffin during his service, and is upset by the fact that the people in Runan's army do not trust him.[1] As proof of his abuse from the Zoans, Zeek shows Kate the scars on his back from numerous lashings in a slave camp.[2] He then tells Kate he began to serve as a Dark Knight to protect his family he left behind.[3] Kate fully believes Zeek's story and is sympathetic to his cause.

Over the course of the game, Kate and Zeek grow close and fall in love. However, Zeek eventually disappears and Kate believes that Zeek has been kidnapped by the Gerxel Cult; Runan does not have the heart to tell her of his suspicions that Zeek is a traitor.[4] If Kate is in Holmes's party when Zeek is fought during Map 31 she frees Zeek after he is captured by Holmes, thinking that he only fought with the enemy forces due to being kidnapped.

Kate later meets up with Zeek after following a group of Zoan Dark Soldiers. Zeek is surprised, but happy, to see her again. Kate tells him that he is free to return to Runan, and that they will keep him from being kidnapped. Before Zeek can say anything, Nevka, a Gerxel priest, appears and congratulates Zeek on capturing a hostage from the enemy army, and is amused that Kate thought Zeek wasn't with the Gerxel Cult. Nevka preemptively reminds Zeek that freeing an enemy hostage is treason and Zeek reluctantly takes Kate prisoner.

Depending on what group she was kidnapped from she appears as an NPC prisoner in either Map 38 (if kidnapped from Holmes's army) or Map 39 (if kidnapped from Runan's army). Sasha can convince her to rejoin the player's forces if she is talked to. If she is rescued during Map 39 it is possible for her to fight Zeek during the battle and question him on the true nature of their relationship and if it were a lie.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Kate joins as a Lady Knight in the first chapter. Her base stats are decent enough to immediately contribute for the first few chapters, and she has access to both swords and bows, giving her some flexibility, able to use lucrative earlygame weapons such as the Estoc or Bowgun. Unfortunately, her growth rates apart from skill and weapon level are quite mediocre, so her stats likely will not keep up with the rest of your army for long. Her mediocre performance is hindered further by her low movement, which is stuck at 4 until she promotes. Promoting her itself takes significant investment due to her middling stats, and does not provide many benefits besides the aforementioned movement bonus.

Kate's combination of skill, and weapon level, and Earth Saint can help her fish for critical hits or attack skill activations with the many multi-hit bows of Tear Ring Saga without putting herself at risk, but her effectiveness using these weapons over other more proficient bow units is questionable.

The main reason to use Kate is her storyline with Zeig. Should the both of them remain in Runan's army, and given that both her and Sasha are present on Runan Split 3, in order to get the best resolution to the storyline Kate will have to defeat the boss of the game's penultimate chapter. While it can be possible to accomplish this using a combination of the Empower staff, Charm, and supports, it's much easier if Kate has had a significant amount of training over the course of the game.

Overall, Kate is an unimpressive unit, but one the player might elect to use anyway for story purposes.
