Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Holmes is the second main Lord type character of Tear Ring Saga. Immediately his potent combat abilities will make themselves apparent, as he is able to deal respectable damage with his bows, including being able to double attack enemies with negative Attack Speed with the Bowgun for massive damage. He also starts with the Longbow, giving him a long ranged option even against other ranged units.
In addition to his strong base stats in strength, skill, weapon level, and speed, Holmes has excellent growths in all areas sans defense. Holmes will easily become a powerful Player Phase attacker who can easily dispatch normal enemies and has the hitrates necessary to take on problematic Monster type enemies such as Ops and Harpies. Holmes also benefits from the wide variety of powerful bows available to him, such as the Brave Bow, Brave Crossbow, Killer Bow, Chu-ko-nu, and Dragon Arrow. Whenever Holmes initiates combat, there are few who can match his prowess.
Unfortunately, being locked in to only using bows before promotion hurts how applicable his good combat is. On enemy phase, his mediocre defense, lack of magical resistance and inability to counterattack at melee range leaves him reliant on party members to protect him. Additionally, only having 5 movement for the majority of the game hurts his flexibility turn to turn, although his access to long range weaponry alleviates this. When he promotes at the end of Chapter 29, he gets a modest stat boost but importantly the ability to use swords, making him much better of a physical fighter.
In terms of skills, Holmes bolsters his attacking power with Wyvern at level 16, although he will not reap the benefits of this skill unless attacking with swords. Open Lock is also monumentally helpful, as it makes Holmes one of the few lockpicking units with capable combat ability, and many maps on Holmes' route make heavy use of locked chests. Continue at level 32 can also helps support his damage output in the late game, especially with multi-hit bows. Upon promotion, Charm gives Holmes a role as a vanguard unit who can support his nearby allies on the front lines.
Late in the game, Holmes obtains the Agneyastra, a powerful and unbreakable sword with high might, high hit, and a boosted critrate, in addition to halving damage taken from breath attacks, helping against lategame Necrodragons.
Ultimately, Holmes is a strong unit throughout the entire game. There's no reason not to use him, as he is required to defeat the game's final boss.
