Talk:Grahnye

From Fire Emblem Wiki, your source on Fire Emblem information. By fans, for fans.

I propose this article be renamed to Grainne. The main reason being that Grainne is the actual name they're going for with this character. I hesitate to say any collection of letters strictly can't be a name, but Grahnye is not a real name. When I google search the term I get wiki articles about this character, which is actually kind of crazy given how minor she is. Grainne meanwhile is an actual Irish name in wide use that, despite what it might look like, is pronounced the same way. In other words, Granhye is a cringy overly literal rendering of the name for anyone actually familiar with the origin. There's basically no doubt here, Kaga used Irish names all over Jugdral and if the character happens to be localized officially in English, it's almost certain they'll spell it Grainne as they're actually pretty dedicated to authentic spelling of Irish names in the series (if not entirely dedicated to coaching the English voice actors in how to say them correctly). Our current (unwritten) policy for characters who are not given localized names is to use English spellings from official Japanese sources where possible, and Grahnye's name is spelled in English in the book Fire Emblem Treasure. PikaSamus (talk) 15:46, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Well if that's the policy then that's the policy. I thought the suggestion would be possible since you guys go against the popular fan translation of Bulzark in favor of what his name probably is meant to be, but on looking at the article now I see the justification for that are some in game data files. That being saodI wouldn't say Treasure spelled any names in English. It wasn't released in English. Those are Romanizations of the name more than attempts to actually translate them. If we get a Genealogy remake and they expand on Eldigan and Aless then this character will absolutely be localized as Grainne. Jotari (talk) 19:31, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Right now Bulzark is Brzak or whatever mainly because that is the internal name used in the game data, and we used to treat those on the same level as stuff like Treasure. As for whether it is English spelling or a romanization, I think the practical difference negligible. And as the policy is not formally codified, I do think it is possible for exceptions to be made if so desired. PikaSamus (talk) 19:49, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
