With all due respect, sire, you're taking a great risk crossin' those mountains that's Soothsire territory. The Soothsires are fearsome bandits, always raidin' the villages and harryin' what travelers dare pass by.
— A villager in Galder

The Soothsires (Japanese: サムシアン Samsians), short for the Samsooth Sires,[1] are a brigand clan preying on the unfortunate travelers who have to make their ways through the Samsooth Mountains.

History

During the War of Shadows, the Soothsires had managed to hire the swordsman Navarre into their ranks. As Marth's army made their way into the Samsooth Mountains, a cleric named Lena was escaping from the bandits in order to tend to the sick. The Soothsires discovered and attempted to kill her, but one of their thieves, Julian, fell in love with her, and proceeded to betray his comrades and help her escape. When the two discovered that Marth was in the area, they joined his forces and together managed to defeat the Soothsires and their leader, Hyman.[2]

After the fall of Dolhr and the conclusion of the War of Shadows, a small group of survivors who escaped death from Marth's forces banded to revive the organization; they continued their operations, pillaging villages and kidnapping citizens.[3] They were defeated once again, this time by a group of assassins led by Eremiya and Gharnef; though the attack was ostensibly meant to rescue the children kidnapped by the bandits,[4] the true reason for the attack was to let Gharnef judge the strength of the assassins.[5] According to Katarina, this attack on the revived Soothsires supposedly wiped out the group.[6] However, several members of the Soothsires were encountered by Marth and the Altean League near Adria Pass during the climax of the War of Heroes.[7][Note 1]

Even after the Soothsires's repeated defeats, brigands continued to inhabit the Ghoul's Teeth; millennia later, by Chrom's time, the mountains's crags were "filled with bandits and wild beasts of every stripe".[8] Whether these bandits are part of yet another incarnation of the Soothsires or another organization entirely is unclear.
