Introduction

Ostia's military primarily consists of soldiers in heavy armor. With them, Castle Ostia has always been famously secure. For countless years, the castle has been said to be impregnable. However, the rumors are about to be proven wrong by Roy, who, ironically, only does so for the castle's own protection...

Opening

(In the throne room)

Legance: The enemy has broken into the castle?! How could Debias have failed against them?! Were those Ilian mercenaries that skilled? ...Or was the Lycian Army larger than we expected...? Whatever the case, they have broken into the impregnable Castle Ostia! We must defeat them here, or we'll be a laughingstock in Bern... You over there!
Soldier: Yes, General!
Legance: Have the troops take defensive positions throughout the castle! Particularly around the throne room! We must not allow the Lycian Army any further into the castle!
Soldier: Of course, General!
Legance: One other matter. I want you to have Lilina quietly assassinated during the battle.
Soldier: What? ...I thought we were to keep her alive.
Legance: I felt she might make a valuable hostage. But many of our rebel soldiers still swear loyalty to her. If we openly use her as a hostage, those soldiers may turn.
Soldier: If that's the case, General, would they not also turn if we assassinate her?
Legance: That's why I said to do it quietly, isn't it?! Kill her discreetly, and say that she was hit by a stray arrow. We can hold the enemy responsible! Now go!
Soldier: Yes, General...

(At Roy's position)

Astolfo: ...General Roy of Pherae, I presume.
Roy: Who are you?! An enemy?!
Astolfo: No, no. I'm on your side. My name is Astolfo. I used to work here in the service of the marquess.
Merlinus: What kind of work were you doing exactly? You certainly aren't dressed like a servant...
Astolfo: A bit nosy, don't you think, old man? I'm a spy, see. I gather information, steal things, check on people... Things like that.
Merlinus: That explains it.
Astolfo: I'm not much of a spy if you can tell I work for a noble at first glance, am I? I've been running around Lycia gathering intelligence for about a month now. When I heard about Araphen, I got back as quickly as my legs would allow. And what do I find but those muttonheads Legance and Debias inciting rebellion! I couldn't save Lord Hector, but I won't let them take Lady Lilina.
Roy: Then you'll join us? Do you know where Lilina is?
Astolfo: Of course. Finding that stuff out is my job. Lady Lilina is locked in a small room in the heart of the castle. And Legance s sitting on the throne like he owns the place.
Roy: We have to hurry then. We must defeat the rebels and save Lilina before Narcian arrives from Bern!

(The battle begins)

In battle

At the start of turn 1, enemy phase, in the chamber where Lilina is locked

Lilina: What's all that noise? Is there a battle going on? I wish I could see outside this chamber...

At the start of turn 5, enemy phase, in the northwestern chamber, Barthe, Gwendolyn and Ogier arrive from the northwest

Ogier: Sir Barthe, it's a dead end!
Barthe: This wall has cracks in it. We can break it down if we hit it with our weapons.
Gwendolyn: I wonder where Lady Lilina is.
Barthe: I have a pretty good idea of where she might be. I've known this castle for a long time. I do wonder what's causing all the noise, though.
Gwendolyn: The Lycian Army, perhaps? My brother must be with them...
Barthe: ...We can't be sure he's still alive. You had best keep your hopes low.
Gwendolyn: Ah... Yes, you're right.
Ogier: Sir Barthe, must you be so aloof? Bors is Gwendolyn's only brother.
Barthe: We must always stand firmly in reality.
Ogier: But-
Gwendolyn: It's all right, Ogier. Sir Barthe is right.
Barthe: As a knight of Ostia, you must always remain calm. It matters not how grave the situation. Understood, Gwendolyn?
Gwendolyn: ...Yes, sir.

(Barthe, Gwendolyn and Ogier become playable)

At the start of turn 10, enemy phase, Cath appears next to the right stairs in the heart of the castle (if she survived Chapter 6)

Cath: Oh baby! Just as I thought. They're at it again. How stupid can these nobles get? I'll never understand what fun it is fighting all the time. Oh well. I'll take the opportunity to swipe what I can.

(Cath starts moving toward the nearest chests and taking whatever she can)

Talk conversations

Bors and Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn: Bors! You're all right!
Bors: Is that you, Gwendolyn? I'm so glad to see you in one piece. Wha...!? What... what's that you're wearing?! Did you join up with the Ostian knights?
Gwendolyn: Ah... Actually, yes. I was knighted just yesterday.
Bors: What are you thinking...? I told you to leave the fighting to me and live as you wish! You didn't need to become a knight...
Gwendolyn: Yes, well, I thought about it, and I realized that this is what I want.
Bors: But...
Gwendolyn: I don't want to sit idly by and wait for you to return from battle. I want to be a great knight, just like you.
Bors: ......
Gwendolyn: ...Bors?
Bors: You've always been a stubborn one, Gwendolyn.
Gwendolyn: Bors...
Bors: Live as you wish. If Mother and Father were alive, I'm certain they would say the same... But the life of a knight is never easy!
Gwendolyn: Yes, I'm prepared! I'm ready for the challenge!

Lilina talks to Barthe

Lilina: Barthe!
Barthe: Lady Lilina! I am overjoyed to see you safe.
Lilina: Barthe, you were right. Legance was planning this rebellion.
Barthe: ......
Lilina: I'm sorry... If only I'd trusted your word, this would not have happened...
Barthe: No... Lady Lilina, you have nothing to apologize for. Legance betrayed your kindness and trust. He is the one responsible for this. It is your undying kindness that we soldiers respect the most, milady.
Lilina: Barthe...

Lilina talks to Bors

Bors: Lady Lilina! You are unharmed!
Lilina: Bors, I'm sorry that I worried you.
Bors: Not at all, milady! You are well... That in itself is enough for me.
Lilina: Thank you, Bors. And you kept your promise to protect Roy. I knew I could depend on you.
Bors: Thank you, milady!

Lilina and Roy

Roy: Lilina!
Lilina: ...Roy? Is it really you?
Roy: Yes, it's me!
Lilina: You came! Thank you so much.
Roy: I'm so glad you're unhurt. Here, take this spell tome. Use it to defend yourself for the time being.
Lilina: Thanks.

(Lilina receives a Thunder tome from Roy)

Roy and Cath

(If they are talking for the first time)

Roy: Hey! You're...
Cath: Oops...
Roy: Wait!
Cath: Hey, cut it out! Let go of my arm! Ow! That hurts!
Roy: Oh, I'm sorry. But what are you doing here?
Cath: Well, uh, you know, this and that. I'm a busy girl. Ha ha ha...
Roy: Here? On a battlefield?
Cath: Oh yes, precisely BECAUSE this is a battlefield- Whoops, better watch my tongue...
Roy: Do you have some ulterior motive?
Cath: Uh...
Roy: Wait, is that why you told us the escape route?
Cath: Um, what? Sorry, I'm a little deaf in this ear!
Roy: Just who are you?
Cath: Don't worry about it! Forget you saw me. Gotta go. Cheers!
Roy: Hey, wait!

(If they are talking for the second time)

Roy: It's you!
Cath: Ugh, you again... Er, fancy meeting you here! Ha ha ha...
Roy: ...You're a thief. You shouldn't steal. It's not right.
Cath: Nah, it's fine. I only take from the rich. No one's going to starve or anything.
Roy: That doesn't make it any better.
Cath: Oh really? Then let me offer you this. You nobles take food and money from people living in what you call your land. How is tax collection any different than tribute to a bandit?
Roy: We protect the people in return!
Cath: You do not! You kill them in wars like this!
Roy: We didn't start this war. Bern invaded, so we have to defend the people...
Cath: You can't just do anything you want and say you're defending us! How does burning down villages help us anyway?!
Roy: Burning down villages?! We never-! Wait a minute, was your...?
Cath: ...My village was burned to the ground by our marquess. He said that he had to do it to prepare for Bern's attack.
Roy: But... that's...
Cath: We always had barely enough to get by, and then we lost everything... Our homes... Our crops... And here you come, saying it's wrong to steal? Ha! Look who's talking! The nobility steals from the poor so you can live in luxury at our expense!
Roy: I... I don't know what to say.
Cath: Sigh. Don't get gloomy. I really don't like talking about how pitiful we are anyway. But you started it.
Roy: I...
Cath: Ah, to heck with this. It's no fun stealing after a conversation like that. I'm outta here. Ta-ta!
Roy: ......

(After either conversation, Cath's AI changes; she starts escaping the map instead of opening doors and pilfering loot. However, she remains an enemy)

Battle quotes

Legance enters combat

Legance: Dogs of the Lycian Army... Come. I shall cut you down where you stand!

Legance enters combat with Barthe

Barthe: Legance, you miscreant! Have you no shame for your betrayal of Lord Hector?!
Legance: Barthe... Shut your ugly mouth. Lord Hector was a fool. His death was his own doing. I do not intend to fall along with him.
Barthe: You'll eat those words!

Legance enters combat with Bors

Legance: Bors! I see you yet live.
Bors: I do. And I see you took over Ostia in my absence...
Legance: Do you have any grievances with that? Take it back yourself... if you can!

Legance enters combat with Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn: Legance! You shall fall here!
Legance: Ah, Bors's sister, correct? You have the courage, but can you truly stand against me?

Legance enters combat with Lilina

Legance: Lady Lilina? I see the assassination failed...
Lilina: Legance... Why?
Legance: Times are changing, milady. I won't be left in the dust. I'm not like Lord Hector. He was too foolish to accept the obvious.
Lilina: Hush yourself! I will not let you insult my father!

Legance dies

Legance: How? You will only... be crushed by Bern... How can you fight with such conviction...?

Ending

(If Lilina is alive)

Roy: We've finally retaken the castle, Lilina.
Lilina: Thank you, Roy. I'm glad that my father didn't have to go to the trouble.
Roy: !
Lilina: Roy, is my father still in Araphen? I heard there was a horrible battle there, but how much longer will he be?
Roy: Lilina... You haven't heard?
Lilina: Heard what?
Roy: Lord Hector... passed on.
Lilina: What...?
Roy: I'm sorry... By the time we arrived at Castle Araphen... It was already under Bern's control.
Lilina: It's not your fault... Don't apologize.
Roy: Lord Hector had been fatally wounded when we arrived. If only we had gotten there sooner, we could have helped him...
Lilina: No... I... was prepared for this... I'm the daughter of a warrior. I've been taught to steel myself in times such as these.
Roy: Lilina.
Lilina: Everybody kept it from me... They didn't want to hurt me... But I'm strong... I can handle this...
Roy: Lilina, you don't have to hold back...
Lilina: Roy... I...
Roy: We'll get through this... I'm here for you.

(The next chapter will be Chapter 8x)

(If Lilina is dead)

Merlinus: Lord Roy! Bern's wyvern riders are in front of Castle Ostia!
Roy: What?! They're here already?!

(Roy leaves the castle and heads to the center of Ostia, only to find Narcian and his Wyvern Riders)

Narcian: Hm hm hm... You must be Roy. I thank you for ridding me of that cretin Legance. Now, leave Ostia to me and we can all go home with our limbs attached.
Roy: Never! I'll never hand Ostia over to the likes of you...!
Narcian: Oho? You think you can best us with that sad little group of yours? I will cut you open, just as I did with Hector!
Roy: ......
???: That's enough!

(The Etrurian army rushes into Ostia as allied units)

Soldier: General Narcian! A legion has arrived from Etruria!
Narcian: I can see that, you fool! But why...
Perceval: I am Perceval, Knight General of Etruria. Mage General Cecilia informed that the Lycian Army had requested Etruria's aid.
Narcian: What...?!
Cecilia: We are prepared for battle. Can those wyvern riders of yours stand against our might?
Narcian: You...!
Cecilia: I am Cecilia, Mage General of Etruria! Ostia is now under our protection.
Narcian: Argh...! You... you...!!!

(A Bern soldier appears next to Narcian)

Soldier: General Narcian, please control your temper! General Perceval is one of the most skilled knights in Etruria! Combined with General Cecilia, we haven't a chance!
Narcian: I know that! We're leaving! Cecilia, was it? We'll see who has the last laugh!

(Narcian and the Bern army leave the map)

(Cecilia and Perceval approach Roy)

Perceval: Are you General Roy of the Lycian Army?
Roy: Y-yes, I am! I lead the Lycian Army in Lord Hector's place.
Perceval: It's a pleasure. You have my sympathy for the current turmoil in Lycia. Our king also sends his condolences for Lord Hector.
Roy: Thank you. If you hadn't helped us... Ostia would be under Bern's control now.
Perceval: You have no reason to thank me. I simply followed my king's orders. You should thank Cecilia. She defied the king until he agreed to help you.
Roy: She... opposed the king?
Perceval: Yes, she put her neck on the line. Well, I must be off. Etruria calls. As one of the three Generals of Etruria, it requires my presence. Cecilia, will you take care of the loose ends?
Cecilia: Yes. Thank you, Perceval. Leave the rest to me.

(Perceval leaves Ostia)

Roy: Wow... General Perceval... Just his presence was intimidating.
Cecilia: Nervous, were you?
Roy: General Cecilia! It is good to see you again.
Cecilia: How are you, Roy? You look a little tired.
Roy: I'm fine, thanks to you. It could have been a calamity.
Cecilia: I'm glad we made it in time.
Roy: I'm sorry I put you through so much trouble.
Cecilia: Don't be. It will benefit Etruria for Ostia to go under our protection.
Roy: Benefit Etruria? How?
Cecilia: Bern's been increasingly aggressive, as you know. If Bern gains any further strength, the balance of power will be shattered. Still, we haven't been attacked, so we couldn't simply declare war.
Roy: So when we requested aid, it was justification to declare war on Bern?
Cecilia: Precisely. We only did what is best for our land. You needn't feel that you are in our debt.
Roy: If you insist. Regardless, please come in and meet the rest of the army.

(Roy walks back into the castle in the north)

Cecilia: ...He's grown so much in the short time since I met him last. He's maturing into a man.

(Cecilia follows Roy into the castle)

(The next chapter will be Chapter 9)
