Raphael Kirsten (pronounced /ɹɑfi'ɛl 'kɝstɪn/[key]; Japanese: ラファエル Raphael) is a character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is a student at the Officers Academy and a member of the Golden Deer.

Biography

Raphael is the son of a family of merchants from the Leicester Alliance, and an old friend of Ignatz. In Imperial Year 1177, his parents passed away in an unfortunate accident involving monsters, which is speculated to have been caused by Count Gloucester in an attempt to weaken Duke Riegan's influence in the Alliance. After this, Raphael and with his sister went to live with his grandparents. In 1180, he enrolls in the Officers Academy at the Garreg Mach Monastery and joins the Golden Deer, studying and fighting alongside them.

After the timeskip, if Raphael is a member of Byleth's class, he returns to Garreg Mach on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. If not recruited, on the Azure Moon route he remains with Claude and fights alongside him in the Battle at Gronder on Leicester's side, where he can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion. Raphael makes no appearances in the story on the Crimson Flower and Silver Snow routes; in the latter's case, he is most likely one of the many casualties of the Battle at Gronder.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Role

Raphael is a starting playable character for the Golden Deer route, a recruitable unit on the Black Eagles and Blue Lions routes and a recurring enemy for non-Crimson Flower routes should he not be poached during Part I.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Raphael is a physically-oriented unit and is overall fairly average. Raphael's growths are very lopsided, focusing primarily on strength, defense, and HP at the expense of having the lowest growths in magic, resistance, and speed in the game. Out of all students, aside from the lords, Raphael has the highest strength and HP bases accompanied by a decent defense base ensuring that Raphael deals good damage with gauntlets and their brave effect and tanks fairly well on the enemy phase provided he does not get doubled. As the game progresses, Raphael will prove to be offensively proficient provided he keeps using gauntlets; however, he will also severely fall behind in speed and his charm will be similarly handicapped, both of which limit his tanking potential by opening him to getting doubled by the enemy and getting inflicted with the rattled status inflicted when hit by an enemy gambit. Potentially getting doubled by all enemies is a huge weakness for Raphael and leaves him somewhat vulnerable on the frontlines. While Raphael's speed will be sufficient with lightweight equipment on lower difficulties in Part I, come Part II, most all enemies, save for enemy Fortress Knights will be able to exploit his low speed. This weakness is magnified on maddening where enemies become so strong they will easily be able to dispatch him in two rounds of combat, one if the enemy attacks with magic. Raphael desperately needs Quick Riposte, which guarantees he doubles on the enemy phase while preventing the enemy from doing so, to bolster his general survivability, though since the skill is obtained by mastering the War Master class, it will likely be obtained very late into the game, so until then Raphael can be surprisingly fragile without heavy investment into his defenses. Moreover, Raphael's personal skill of Goody Basket has a lot of missed potential providing Raphael little to no unique benefit. First of all, Goody Basket is very unreliable as it procs off of Raphael's luck and generally only heals 3-7 HP; second, the skill is far outclassed by vulneraries and the B-rank gauntlet combat art of Healing Focus; and lastly, since the skill randomly procs, it can knock Raphael out of the ideal HP range for skills like Vantage or Defiant Crit. In all other situations, the skill is at worst irrelevant.

Since Raphael has the worst magical growths in the game he is best off promoting into physically-oriented classes; however, Raphael's best promotion path varies according to what kind of performance the player wants from him. Since Raphael will rarely if ever double the enemy naturally, his highest offensive potential lies in maximizing his damage output with gauntlets; therefore if you want Raphael to be offensive, his promotion path should be Fighter to Brigand—master the class for Death Blow—to Grappler then to War Master to obtain Quick Riposte. It should be noted that after obtaining Quick Riposte, both Grappler and War Master are suitable options for Raphael's final class as each has Fistfaire and their own unique strengths. Grappler has the unique Fierce Iron Fist combat art which hits three times simultaneously while War Master has a better class modifier in strength and a general Crit +20. Alternatively you could fully invest into Raphael's defense and HP by promoting him to an Armored Knight then a Fortress Knight. Bear in mind that even if you plan to follow this path, Death Blow is still recommended as armored classes can still use gauntlets. Moreover, Quick Riposte is also recommended as preventing the enemy from doubling him will only bolster his ability to tank multiple enemies and deal out decent damage on the enemy phase. It is also worth noting that Raphael can promote into a Wyvern Lord. The class still has great offenses and the upgrade to base 20 speed, 24 with the class modifier, will prove sufficient on lower difficulties to prevent many enemies from doubling Raphael, though this does come at the cost of not being able to use gauntlets without dismounting, not being able to equip guard adjutants, and limiting Raphael to flying battalions.

Recruiting for Other Routes

When recruited outside of the Golden Deer house, Raphael will come with training in gauntlets and axes. Raphael coming with training that puts him on the path to War Master is beneficial and him becoming a Brawler offers you a guard adjutant immediately upon recruitment; however, Raphael's recruitment requirements are not ideal. Training Byleth's armor rank to specifically recruit Raphael is suboptimal as Byleth performs better in just about any class besides fortress knight. Moreover, Raphael's paralogue does not offer any attractive or unique rewards for clearing it. As usual, attaining a B-rank support between Raphael and Byleth will make Raphael eventually request to join Byleth's class on his own, though it bears consideration as to whether or not you want to pour so much effort into raising Raphael’s support to B-rank during exploration when there are many other students who make better contributions to your team. It is also worth noting that if you're a Blue Lion and wish to recruit everyone, he shares his armor requirement with Ferdinand, who cannot have said requirement lowered through supports; therefore, supporting Raphael becomes a lower priority since you will still have to get that C armor for Ferdinand.

Endings

Raphael, Beast of Leicester
Raphael returned to his hometown to serve his liege lord as a knight. After years of loyal service, he resigned his duty to devote his attention to the inn that his grandfather and sister had opened during his time away. Eventually he became the inn's proprietor and developed a reputation for astonishingly good cooking.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Ignatz, Wordly Artist
Raphael returned to his hometown to serve his liege lord as a knight, and spent his spare time helping out at the inn that his family had opened during his time away. He was compelled to give up knighthood and manage the inn full-time, however, when his sister Maya suddenly declared her ambition to become an artist and vanished. Years later, when she finally returned, she did so in the company of another artist: her husband, Ignatz. With cheerful support from Raphael's family, Ignatz and his wife rose to prominence and, with their unique style, set the artistic paradigm in Fódlan for a generation.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Hilda, Free Spirit
Raphael returned to his hometown, where he served his liege lord as a knight for a time. Later, he gave it up to help manage the inn that his family had opened up during his time away. One day, to the great joy of Raphael's sister, Maya, Hilda came to visit. Maya had always treasured the necklace Hilda had made for her. Moved by this, Hilda gave Maya a new gift of a hair band, which inspired Maya to suggest that Raphael convert the inn into an accessory shop. Hilda decided to stay and help out, and eventually became the shop's proprietor and chief artisan. She moved in with Raphael, and the two spent their lives happily dealing in fashionable accessories.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
When Bernadetta first inherited control of House Varley, she hid away and would not dare involve herself in political or administrative affairs. During this time it was Raphael who came to her aid, encouraging her to work through her fear of people. The training period was difficult—"humiliating," according to the journals Bernadetta left behind—but in the end, it had its desired effect. The leader of House Varley became an outgoing and authoritative individual, taking part in public policy. She even took on a very muscular husband.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Leonie took over the mercenary company formerly led by Jeralt. She ran out of money constantly, however, due to sending all of her earnings back to her village, and so developed a reputation for unpaid tavern tabs. When she came upon the inn that Raphael had been helping to run with his family, she was overjoyed to finally find a place that would trust her enough to open a new tab. In her years frequenting the establishment, she accrued such a massive debt to Raphael that the only way to pay him off was to work for him. By the time the debt was finally paid, she had moved in with him. They lived together happily for the rest of their days.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Raphael returned to his hometown, where he served his liege lord as a knight for a time. Later, he gave it up to help manage the inn that his family had opened up during his time away. Away from the battlefield and able to eat as much as he pleased, he eventually began to grow soft. It was around that time that Flayn, who had also neglected her training, came to visit. The two helped motivate one another, and together they embarked on a new exercise routine. Thereafter, it is said that their energetic shouts and cries of exertion could be heard throughout the village at any time of day.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
Raphael returned to his hometown to serve his liege lord as a knight, and spent his spare time helping out at the inn that his family had opened during his time away. Due to his grandfather's age, he was compelled before long to give up knighthood and manage the inn full-time. Soon after that, the inn began to be frequented by Lysithea and her family, who had renounced all claim to nobility and begun a life as commoners. Lysithea found a kindred spirit in Raphael's sister, Maya, and before long, found herself helping out around the place too. Eventually she was put in charge of the kitchen, where it is said she spent the rest of her days happily working.

Ingrid, Stalwart Knight & Raphael, Beast of Leicester
When Galatea territory was seized, Ingrid argued strongly for the preservation of its borders. Her request was granted, and she was appointed to rule. Soon after, Raphael traveled there to pledge his service to Ingrid. He initially signed on as a knight, but quickly discovered that his services were even more desperately needed by the land's farmers, and instead focused his efforts on helping Galatea improve its agriculture. Seeing him work side by side with the commonfolk, Ingrid became enamored with Raphael's character, and eventually asked for his hand in marriage. They held a modest but lively wedding, and the people happily gave their blessing to the union.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Shamir, Distant Archer
Shortly after the war, Shamir gave up on the mercenary life and disappeared. Raphael searcher for her unsuccessfully for a time, but then gave up and returned home to serve his liege lord as a knight. One day, he was given order to drive off a group of bandits, but upon investigation, he discovered that all of the bandits' victims were those who line their pockets by preying upon the innocent. Without warning, Raphael resigned his post, said good-bye to his family, and vanished forever. It is unclear just where he went, but rumors swirled for years of a master archer and a hulking giant who spent their lives as highway robbers, shaking down those who made victims of others.
