— Pent

Pent (Japanese: パント Pant) is an Etrurian nobleman and scholar hailing from House Reglay, the greatest of the Etrurian noble houses, who served as the Mage General of Etruria 980 years after the Scouring. He served as an apprentice to the archsage Athos of the Eight Legends, and often spent long periods away from Etruria to study under him in Arcadia. He and his wife, Louise, joined forces with Eliwood, Hector and Lyn on their quest to defeat Nergal and used his noble connections to assist them in gaining passage to the Shrine of Seals. Decades later his children, Klein and Clarine, would ally with Eliwood's own son, Roy.

Biography

Count of Reglay

Some time after assuming the mantle of Marquess of Reglay, Pent searched for a wife and gathered up to twenty women as possible candidates for marriage. Of these women, the one who won his hand was the then-fourteen-year-old Louise, whose pledge to use her skills with the bow to protect him earned the scorn of the other women in attendance, but won him over with her sheer honesty. The two were married soon after.[1]

Roughly three years prior to his mission with Eliwood, Pent was appointed the Mage General of Etruria, and soon after took on the then-twelve-year-old Erk as his apprentice. However, the demands of his job frequently took him away from Castle Reglay, leaving Louise to take care of Erk.[2] Pent eventually made the acquaintance of Athos, the archsage from the Scouring, who took him on as an apprentice. Pent and Louise frequently travelled between Etruria and Nabata to both study under Athos and fulfill his duties as Mage General.

During one of his visits to Nabata, Pent searched the desert to find an unidentified artifact buried in it, but after finding it he was accosted by the bandits Paul and Jasmine, who demanded he give it up. He refused and fought back against their band, with the assistance of Eliwood, Hector and Lyn, who had just arrived in Nabata themselves. After the battle, he took them to consult with Athos, the "living legend" they sought. When Athos gave the three the mission to find the Shrine of Seals, Pent and Louise volunteered to join them on this mission to Bern, with Pent being intrigued by the prospect of fighting Nergal.

Around the same time that they arrived in Bern, Pent and Louise also had a diplomatic obligation during their visit: to attend the festivities surrounding the coming of age of Bern's Prince Zephiel. Being that Louise was distantly related to Zephiel through his mother, Hellene, Pent and Louise paid a visit to Hellene and consoled her over the crisis facing her. Hellene offered to listen to the group's request, on the condition that they found the missing Fire Emblem. After a visit to Bern Keep led to Eliwood and his group being attacked by a Black Fang army led by Vaida, Pent and Louise volunteered to actively fight alongside Eliwood and gave him a Heaven Seal. He and Louise continued to serve under Eliwood, Hector and Lyn for the remainder of the conflict, even blowing off a need to return to Etruria and file a report on the Shrine of Seals.[3] By the time of the final battle, Louise had become pregnant with their first child.

Athos's successor

Athos died shortly after Nergal's defeat, and Pent chose to resign from his post as Mage General to allow himself time to focus on continuing Athos's research. Pent chose Cecilia as his successor in the role.[4] Afterward, he and Louise largely retreated from public life in Etruria, and within a year of the battle with Nergal, Louise gave birth to their first child, Klein.

When Klein was four years old, the Reglay family attended a gladiator match at the largest arena in Aquileia, during which Klein escaped into the arena pit and was attacked by a lion. He was saved by Dieck, then a young gladiator, who was severely scarred by the lion for his efforts. Out of gratitude, Pent and Louise hired Dieck into their service and began to treat him as a member of the family. Two years into his time with them,[5] Dieck abandoned the Reglay household after rumors and gossip about their treatment of Dieck started to circulate around Etrurian nobility.[6] During this time, Louise gave birth to their second child, Clarine, who was still very young when Dieck left.[7]

While both of their children were actively involved in the Disturbance of Bern as soldiers fighting under Roy, Pent and Louise paid little attention to the conflict even as the rest of Etruria was embroiled in the Revolutionaries crisis.[8]

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

While he never appears in person, Pent is mentioned in passing in several of Klein, Clarine and Dieck's support conversations.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Pent first appears as a NPC in Chapter 22E/23H. Part of the chapter's goal is to ensure he survives, as his death is an automatic Game Over, although in practice Pent is much more powerful than the chapter's enemies and will rarely need the help. Rather, he kills enemies at such a high rate that he runs the risk of stealing the experience needed to enter the sidequest.

Pent later automatically becomes playable in Chapter 24E/26H, along with Louise. If Pent is killed at any time, Louise will also leave the party, and vice versa.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Pent is a pre-promoted Sage who joins in Chapter 24E/26H. He has low growth rates overall, but excellent bases in every area to make up for it. He also joins with A rank in both anima magic and staves, giving him the ability to wield almost any anima tome (with the exception of the S-rank tome Excalibur, which he can easily attain the required weapon level for), and access to every staff in the game at base, including Warp. He joins with a Physic, which he can put to good use right away. Because of the low enemy quality and high enemy density in The Blazing Blade, Pent stands out as an excellent combat unit thanks to the relatively low speed and resistance of most enemies allowing him to one round most of them without much issues. Pent is also unusually durable for a magic user, boasting a decent 33 HP and 11 defense at base, along with decent growths in both areas. As such Pent is rarely threatened by any enemy, aside from a few enemy Druids wielding a Luna tome, but those are rather rare and easily avoidable.

Pent starts with an automatic A support with Louise, giving him useful bonuses. However it should be noted that if Louise falls in battle, Pent will also leave the party, and vice-versa. As such it might not be the best idea to bring Louise along considering she's a far weaker combat unit in comparison to Pent.

Overall, thanks to his excellent combat and staff utility it's difficult to call Pent anything but one of the best units in the game. His only real issue is his somewhat low availability, but he will still contribute well on any map after his joining chapter to the end.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

There are two different variations of Pent available to Heroes, both based on his storyline appearance in The Blazing Blade. The normal variation of Pent is one of the characters added to the game in the Treachery update, and became available for summoning by players on April 6, 2021. A groom variation of Pent was first made available to be summoned by players on May 21, 2019 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Bridal Belonging update. Pent is one of a very few characters to date who had a special variation made available to players before their normal variation in which the normal variation has actually been added to the game, another example being Louise.

Personality and character

Pent behaves unusually for a nobleman. For all his talents and the high esteem Etruria holds him in, he appears to consider the obligations of his bearing secondary to his scholarly pursuits. He freely admits that he and Louise are very frequently absent from Etruria for long periods of time with no warning or excuse given to the court.[9] Even in the middle of being attacked by bandits, he tends to be unconcerned and, when talked to, act as if nothing in particular is happening around him.[10] In the event that his attempt to learn about the Shrine of Seals failed and turned Bern against him, he was prepared to abandon everything and live on the run with Louise, even considering the idea a romantic one.[11] He is also self-deprecating, and despite being considered the finest mage in Etruria, he believes himself to be contributing little to the effort to oppose Nergal, especially compared to Athos.[12] Even when severely wounded, he is more worried about the safety of his friends and allies than his own safety.[13]

Pent's true passion is scholarship and research. Pent has a bad habit of obsessing over his research to the point of ignoring all else and failing to even eat.[14] Accordingly, he is also an avid reader, often picking up any book he finds even in the middle of a battle.[15] Despite not being a practitioner of dark magic, Pent has a strong scholarly interest in the art to the point of owning so many books on the subject that he was surprised to have never read one which he loaned from Canas.[16] At the same time, he acknowledges that there is a latent darker side to both his obsession with knowledge and magical research and that of many others, but believes himself to be stronger than that lure.[17]

Supports

Main article: Pent/Supports

When recruited, Pent automatically has an A-rank support with Louise. This cannot be disrupted in any way, ensuring they always have their paired ending together. As a result, Pent's supports with other characters can only go up to B-rank.

Owing to their status as being already paired together, Pent and Louise do not follow the ordinary support conversation rules, but rather have unique equivalent conversations which occur in specific chapters: their C-rank conversation happens in Chapter 27E/29H, their B-rank in Chapter 30E/32H, and their A-rank in the second part of the Final Chapter. The second conversation will not occur if the first did not, and the third will not occur if one of the other two did not.

  1. "Louise: ...Rebecca, manners and carriage alone do not make one a lady. Certainly, I had to learn the ways of the court... But my husband, Lord Pent, did not marry me for those.
    Rebecca: Do you mean that?
Louise: Haha... I do! I was 14... about your age now, I believe? Count Reglay had gathered as many as 20 women to consider...
    Rebecca: Twenty women!?
Louise: Before Lord Pent would see them, each had to exhibit a special skill. Everyone was eager to demonstrate the qualities of a good wife... And...I was one of those women trying so hard to impress him. They were all highborn ladies of Etruria. They sang, danced, played music, and composed poetry... And I could not have outdone them in any of those arts...
Rebecca: So...then...how did he come to choose you?
Louise: ...I said to Lord Pent, "My skill is with the bow." And then... "My sweet lord, if you choose me, I will protect you to life's end."
    Rebecca: No...way!
Louise: My face was flushed after I spoke, and the room filled with laughter. ...I could feel their scorn, as if to say "foolish girl!" But one of them...smiled. And he looked down at me with the kindest eyes... It was...Lord Pent.
    Rebecca: ......
Louise: "I have never met a girl whose heart was so clear, Louise," he said, and he then took my hand. ...I felt like I was being lifted into heaven...
" — Louise and Rebecca, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  2. "Louise: Three years ago... Yes, on a snowy night... Lord Pent brought you home and said, "This is my student." You were only 12... You had such deep, purple eyes, sparkling with intelligence...
Erk: L-Lady Louise, now is really not the time for such old memories...
Louise: Hush... Listen. Lord Pent had only just become a mage general then... and he was hardly ever home in the castle. I was so happy to have such a cute young student around. But that student shut himself away in his room all the time... just reading his books. He didn't eat, he hardly slept, and soon, he collapsed.
" — Louise and Erk, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  3. "Pent: Louise, are you OK?
Louise: I am, Lord Pent. This is the Shrine of Seals, isn't it?
Pent: Yes, it appears so. Its location is a mystery to all but a chosen few... The palace in Etruria will be delighted. I suppose now we must return to Etruria and deliver a full and detailed report...
    Louise: What will you do?
Pent: Louise, what would you like to do?
Louise: I share your feelings on the matter.
Pent: I see... Well, then we shall travel with them, at least for a while longer. I do put you in the most awkward positions, do I not?
Louise: That is decidedly not true. I am pleased simply to continue like this. After all, I'm with you, aren't I, my lord Pent?
" — Pent and Louise, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  4. "Douglas: The former Mage General appointed you as his successor... But many were opposed to you taking the position at first.
Cecilia: Yes, that is true. A female officer was enough to incite the rage of some. I spent most of my earlier days fighting against prejudice.
" — Douglas and Cecilia, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  5. "Dieck: 13 years... Young Master Klain is all grown up, I see.
Klain: You can stop calling me Young Master. I'm 19 now. I serve as a commander under the king himself.
" — Dieck and Klein, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  6. "Klain: ...I wanted to tell you a story. I want you to listen. It was 15 years ago, at Aquileia's greatest arena. A noble's child was attacked by a lion in the opening display.
    Dieck: ......
Klain: A young arena combatant was the one who saved the child. He was a skilled swordfighter who could defeat men twice his size with ease. But fighting a lion isn't the same. He didn't leave the fight unscathed. He left with wounds all over his body and four deep scars on his face.
    Dieck: ......
Klain: The noble, impressed and moved by the swordsman's selfless act, hired him into his family's service and treated him well. For several years, the young man served as the family's personal arena fighter. His name became known all across the land. But one day, he decided to give up that life and left. The child, who looked up to the fighter as if he were a brother, felt betrayed, and was devastated. ...But now I understand. You were doing what you felt was best for me and my family...
Dieck: You...you were much too kind to me. I was just a lowly fighter. Lord Pent and Lady Louise treated me like family. Like a son. Gossip and accusations spread about them. ...That's why I left.
Klain: I understand that now. But you should have stayed.
    Dieck: I'm sorry?
Klain: You always wanted what was best for us... But did you ever consider how much we cared about you? I can't just forget about you...
Dieck: ...You're right. I never considered that. I'm sorry.
" — Klein and Dieck, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  7. "Clarine: You saved my brother's life!
    Dieck: Who told you?
Clarine: Everyone! My father, my mother, my brother himself... I grew up hearing about the great man named Dieck.
    Dieck: ......
Clarine: I was still in the cradle when you left... I always regretted not being able to meet you. But finally, here you are!
" — Clarine and Dieck, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  8. "Dieck: Yeah, I know. Not bad at all. How are Lord Pent and Lady Louise?
Klein: Oh, just as laid-back as always. The revolution doesn't seem to concern them at all. I envy them sometimes.
" — Dieck and Klein, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  9. "Lyn: Well, of course. That's fine, right, Eliwood? Will you send word of your mission to your countrymen?
Pent: There's no reason to, and if we did, who would believe us? Besides, it's not unusual for us to remain absent for long periods. I doubt anyone will be surprised by our absence. Right, my dear?
" — Lyn and Pent, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  10. "Pent: Hello there. Beautiful weather, isn't it?
    Eliwood: Er... Yes, sure.
Pent: Pardon, I'm in the midst of some confusion. I beg your leave.
    Eliwood: Um... ????
" — Pent and Eliwood, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  11. "Pent: If we do not return by tomorrow, return to Lycia and come up with a new plan. Understood?
Eliwood: ...If you fail, what will become of you?
Pent: Everything will work out. It wouldn't be a bad life. Abandoning my position... Living on the run with Louise...
" — Pent and Eliwood, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  12. "Erk: Hardly, master... And so... Do you fight with this army as well?
Pent: Of course. Nergal is as powerful a sorcerer as my own teacher. I'm sure I offer little assistance on my own, but... ...I do try to do what I can...
Erk: How could you say that?! Lord Pent, they could have no stronger ally than you!! It is an honor for any of them to fight by your side!!
" — Erk and Pent, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  13. "He said he would be fine and that we shouldn't worry. He's more concerned for our safety than his own." — Lyn, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  14. "Louise: The same goes for you, Lord Pent. When you're deep in research, you lock yourself away from all concerns. Even if I prepare meals and wait, you don't eat for days...
Pent: It appears I've left you lonely. ...I'm sorry. When this battle is ended, I will amend my bad habits.
" — Louise and Pent, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  15. "Canas: ...Mmm. I wonder where it went? If I dropped it, it should be around here...
    Pent: ......
    Canas: Ah!
    Pent: ...Mm?
    Canas: Excuse me...that book...
Pent: Oh... Is this yours? It looked interesting, so I started reading it... I'm sorry to have kept it from you...
Canas: No, that's perfectly fine... I just...didn't know you had an interest in ancient magic. You look more like one who specializes in the magics of nature.
    Pent: Very perceptive.
" — Canas and Pent, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  16. "Pent: Here is the book I borrowed. It was truly fascinating!
Canas: I am glad it pleased you.
Pent: I have collected a great number of books on elder magic, and I thought I had read them all... But to find one of such high quality that I did not know of...
" — Pent and Canas, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
  17. "Hawkeye: You people do not seek out battle... But when magic is involved, you become ravenous beasts. Why is that?
Pent: Is that how we seem? Strange. But you are right, we do not seek out battle... Still... The concern over magic... It does drive people a bit mad. And the greater the power of that evil, the more it sucks into its maw.
    Hawkeye: ......
Pent: Hawkeye, I am fine. I will not lose myself into that great dark force.
Hawkeye: I believe you. But magic and knowledge have been the end of many men. And it could be the end of you... or me.
" — Hawkeye and Pent, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
