“ | Because I want to prove that you're no match for me! Um... Actually...I need to toughen up, or I might not survive these next battles. That's why. | ” | — Mist to Boyd in their B support. |
---|
Mist (Japanese: ミスト Mist) is a main character throughout Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. She is Ike's younger sister and is one of the few individuals that can touch the Fire Emblem without being possessed by its power. She is about the same age as Rolf, and they both join in Chapter 9 of Path of Radiance. She starts as a cleric and is the only playable character of this class in both games. She can only use staves as a cleric in Path of Radiance, but she can use swords as a cleric in its sequel.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Role
In the beginning of Path of Radiance, Mist merely supports Ike. She and Rolf officially become playable in Chapter 9. Even after this, however, Mist continues to support her brother and the Greil Mercenaries while they fight against Daein. She also carries Lehran's Medallion during the game and is very upset when it is stolen. Mist often hums a song that was used as a lullaby for her and Ike when their mother Elena was still alive, that also turns out to be a heron melody known as the Galdr of Release.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Mist is the second healer available and joins very underleveled at level 1 with low base stats. While having a second healer can be valuable, her stats are inferior to Rhys at base, with only 4 base magic compared to his 10 base magic (likely higher at this point). She also starts with E rank staves as opposed to Rhys's D rank, so she cannot immediately use Mend staves to compensate. Because she is a healer, her experience gain is extremely low without BEXP, making it difficult to level her. Thus, if one wants to use her at all, she requires significant BEXP investment.
However, she is one of the units that benefits most from an early master seal promotion. When promoted, she gains a mount, giving her a massive boost in movement and canto, and also a significant +4 magic bonus. This makes her the only mounted healer through the majority of the game. Her staff utility becomes unmatched with her good magic growth as well. She can also use swords, though her strength is too terrible to use physical swords well. While magic swords turns her into an excellent offensive unit, her sword rank is initially too low to use them; if the player wishes to turn her into an offensive Valkyrie, Arm Scrolls can be used. She also can help with the Black Knight fight by healing Ike on player phase.
Mist starts with the Miracle skill, which, while unreliable, Mist makes good use of due to her excellent luck growth and bad durability. Shade also boosts her survival rate, though it is again unreliable.
Mist has a water affinity which gives both attack and defense. While Mist herself doesn't benefit much from these boosts, many of her partners benefit from these boosts. Partnering with Titania and Jill gives both units a +3 defense boost at max support, and promoted Mist will have the same movement, making them decent partners. Partnering with Boyd gives him a +3 attack +1 defense boost at max support, though the attack boost may be overkill for him. Partnering with Mordecai gives both units a double water affinity boost, with a significant +3 attack and defense; unfortunately this support pairing is held back by Mordecai's late transformation.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Role
Mist does not have much of a role in Radiant Dawn until later in Part 3 when she faints due to the effects of Lehran's Medallion. After Yune is released from the medallion, she decides to talk to Mist because of her balance of chaos and order.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Mist is one of two healers in Ike's group in part 3. Her base magic is 10 lower than Rhys's base magic, and her other stats are either on par or lower than his, making her an immediate inferior healer. She has no physical durability and is prone to getting double attacked. However, having a second weaker healer through the majority of part 3 can still be useful. She has her own weapon, the Florete, which is a respectably accurate 1-2 range sword, but her strength and speed base are too low to accomplish much with it.
Her magic growth is not bad but nowhere high enough to compensate for her very low base magic, so her staff utility will remain limited. While her skill and speed growths are good, her bases in them are not very high and there are no magic swords available for her to use, so her offenses will always be limited. Although promoting to a Valkyrie massively increases her utility as a mounted staff-user, the game overall is less kind to units on horses, and she cannot promote early without the Holy Crown (available in Chapter 4-2). She is forced onto Ike's team in part 4, which is fortunate since his team is the least impactful of the three teams for horse units.
Mist starts with the Miracle skill, which, given her high luck base and growth, works well for her due to her terrible physical durability. As she should never be used offensively, only defensive or utility skills should be used on her such as Shade. She learns Sol upon promotion but her offense is so terrible that her damage and self-healing will be seriously limited.
Mist has the very useful water affinity, giving both attack and defense. She is small enough to be easily rescued by almost any unit, which builds supports very quickly; in particular, having Titania or Haar rescue Mist with savior gives them nice and fast support benefits, then when promoted, she can keep up with them. Mia and Boyd both have fire affinities, so they gain a respectable +3 attack bonus with a light defense bonus at max support with Mist, and also have similar move before promotion.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Mist is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Path of Radiance character set. Mist is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Smash Brethren DLC series; additionally, Mist appears as an ally in Smash Brethren 2.

Mist is a bright and cheerful young girl who seems to possess a large amount of calmness and control, much like her mother Elena, meaning she has the ability to hold Lehran's Medallion without being driven insane and controlled by it.

Mist or Misty is ultimately derived from the English "mist" or "fog". Mist is also a valkyrie in Norse mythology.[citation needed] |

Alja |
"Alja" means in the Arabian language "high ranked". In the Russian language "Alja" is a short form of "Aljona" and means "radiant". The reason why the translators changed the name "Mist" to "Alja" in the German version of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Fire Emblem Awakening is probably because "Mist" means in the German language "dung", "rubbish" or "crud" depending on when the word "Mist" is used. In this case the German word "Mist" is inappropriate as a name for a living being.[citation needed] |
