If I go back, I have to succumb to the will of my late father and succeed the throne. But my uncles would never have it. One slip up and there'd be mutiny, like there is here. You know who suffers then? The people.
— Lewyn

Lewyn (Japanese: レヴィン Levn) is the errant prince, later king, of Silesse, the son of Queen Lahna and his late predecessor, and a full-blooded descendant of the Wind Crusader Ced. In his youth, displeased at the inheritance squabbles of his uncles Myos and Daccar at the expense of their subjects, he departed Silesse to travel the world as an anonymous bard. In time, he came to Agustria, where he became involved in Sigurd's efforts to oppose King Chagall's abuses of the people, and accompanied Sigurd in exile to Silesse, where Lahna gave him the Book of Forseti, and then back into Grannvale. Seventeen years after the Battle of Belhalla, he emerged as an important figure in the liberation wars against the Grannvale Empire, serving as the personal advisor of Seliph.

Biography

Note: This biography adheres to the canon defined by Thracia 776, which dictates that Lewyn married Erinys and is the father of Ced and Fee, and all references to his marriage with Erinys are in accordance with this. In the gameplay of Genealogy, although the game's events still encourage him to be paired with Erinys, his choice of wife – and thus his children – remain entirely at the player's discretion, and none of the events with Erinys's family would happen in those cases.

Prince and bard

Following his father's death, Lewyn became an unwilling participant in the squabble over who would inherit the Silessian throne, in which his uncles Myos and Daccar claimed they had more of a right to it than Lewyn himself. Even though the vast majority of Silesse's citizens supported Lewyn as their successor, Lewyn grew weary of his uncles' tantrum and, knowing that his succession to the throne would provoke violence upon the nation from his uncles, he fled the country in Grann 756.[2] Once out of Silesse, Lewyn disguised himself as an anonymous bard and travelled the world in this guise, never revealing his true identity.

In Grann 758, Lewyn was travelling through Agustria, and had spent some time with Silvia, at the beginning of the Agustrian war against Sigurd. When Macbeth unleashed bandits on the Agustrian villages, Lewyn departed to fight them, with Silvia following. He confronted Sigurd about the misery his fight with Chagall caused the people of Agustria, but was impressed by Sigurd's attitude and sided with him to finish the job. During the fight he encountered Erinys, dispatched by his mother to find him and tricked by Chagall into thinking he was a hostage held by Sigurd; he reluctantly agreed to return to Silesse with her after sorting out some problems, and she joined Sigurd's army to stay with him in the meantime.

When Lahna gave Sigurd free refuge in Silesse after being branded a traitor, Lewyn went with him. He and Lahna had some difficulty getting along in light of how he abandoned her, though Annand insisted that Lahna was actually happier than she had been in a while to see him. He fought in the subsequent civil war sparked by his uncles, enraged at their abusive approach to the people and country and by the death of Annand, and when Sigurd's army reclaimed Silesse Castle, Lahna presented him with his birthright, the Book of Forseti, to use in assisting Sigurd on his quest for justice. At some point during or after this time, he married Erinys.

After the Battle of Belhalla

Lewyn was present at the Battle of Belhalla, and was personally killed by Archbishop Manfroy during or after it. He was revived soon after by Forseti, who also took possession of Lewyn at the cost of some of Lewyn's memories. After being revived, Lewyn completely disappeared for a time, but at some point returned to Silesse to live with Erinys and his children. He spent an undetermined amount of time with them before abandoning them again, leaving Erinys to rule Silesse and raise their children alone in the face of Grannvale.[3] Years later, Lewyn found Julia in Belhalla shortly after her narrow escape from her Loptous-possessed brother, amnesiac and badly injured. Though unaware of her true identity as a Grannvale royal, he took her to a remote region of Silesse to take care of her, though the two eventually abandoned Silesse as Grannvale's grip on the country grew too strong to protect her.

In the intervening years as Grannvale transformed into a despotic force, Lewyn appears to have set to work orchestrating efforts to formally oppose the Empire, among them hiring August to act as an advisor to Leif. In Grann 776, in the aftermath of the fall of Tahra, Lewyn appeared before August to check in on his progress, admitting he never expected any outcome other than Tahra's fall. He then departed to Orgahil to check up on something unidentified occuring there, after which he would travel to Isaach.

Lewyn arrived in Isaach in Grann 777, during the early stages of Seliph's fight against the Dozel occupation of the country, and he met with Seliph after his conquest of Ganeishire Castle. Praising Seliph's decision to launch his revolution at this time, Lewyn left Julia in Seliph's care as Silesse was proving too troublesome to house her in, then departed for Leonster. Lewyn returned shortly after Seliph defeated Danann and conquered Rivough, bringing news of the state of the world and introducing Seliph to the full scope of the activities of Grannvale. He advised Seliph to travel south to Leonster to meet with Leif and his liberation force, then departed with him, acting as an advisor and tactician.

At Dahna, Lewyn gave Seliph a brief lesson in the history of the Twelve Crusaders, and a cryptic message about the "return" of the Crusaders. Following that, he guided Seliph's army through Thracia and Miletos until their arrival in Grannvale itself at the climax of the war. As Seliph's army stormed Grannvale, Lewyn shared with him a more detailed history of the Crusaders, identifying the gods and Loptous as dragons, explaining the crucial role Naga's power plays in combating Loptous, and confirming that Julius was possessed by Loptous and appared to be reconstructing the Loptrian Empire. Having since learned of Julia's true identity, he also advised Seliph that Julia would be instrumental in defeating Julius and that finding her and the Book of Naga was a priority.

At the end of the war, despite the pleas of his children, Lewyn declined to return to Silesse with them, insisting that he would be a liability to the restoration of the country. Before departing himself, Seliph realized the true nature of Lewyn as the host of Forseti, and thanked Forseti for his assistance.

Second generation

Role

Lewyn is relegated to non-playable status in the second generation, instead regularly appearing in cutscenes as Seliph's advisor and tactician. If he was married to Silvia, Erinys or Tailtiu in the first generation, this allows Seliph to have special conversations with his children (Lene, Ced and Fee, or Tine) which boost their stats.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Lewyn joins in Chapter 2 as a level 6 Bard. He has good base stats, especially in magic, skill, and speed. While he does not have Follow-Up, preventing him from doubling enemies, he has Adept and Critical. His Adept activation rate is very high thanks to excellent attack speed, so he can still strike twice often. Critical also allows him to perform critical hits, killing many enemies in one hit when it triggers. Thanks to his decent speed and skill growths (bolstered by major Forseti blood), Lewyn should continue to have no problem activating his skills throughout the first half of the game. Furthmore, Lewyn has 1-2 range and hits on resistance. Enemies in Genealogy tend to have low resistance and lack 1-2 range weapons, so Lewyn can often deal high damage without being counter-attacked.

Lewyn's most significant problem is his low movement and lack of access to a mount. While he has 6 movement, compared to the 5 that some infantry classes sport, he still lags far behind mounted units who possess upwards of 8 movement and the Canto skill that allows them to continue moving after attacking. This poses a major weakness for Lewyn on Genealogy's massive maps, as he will often struggle to even make it to a fight on time.

In Chapter 4, when Lewyn visits Silesse, he will obtain the Forseti tome. As a Holy Weapon, it is nothing short of dominant. It has 30 might, low weight, and grants its wielder +10 skill and +20 speed. While using the Forseti tome, Lewyn's combat is arguably the best in the first generation, as long as he can reach the enemies. While wielding the Forseti, Lewyn can also clear the arena without any trouble. He is good at it even without the Holy Weapon, but he breezes through all seven fights with it. This means he will always have the money to repair Forseti, and he can always give his remaining money to his lover.

Lewyn's promotion to Sage grants him incredible stat bonuses and access to B-rank staves, allowing him to support allies without fighting. Perhaps of equal importance (especially when playing for an A-rank in Experience), staves grant Lewyn the ability to spam things like Warp and Return for easy XP.

Lewyn as a father

Lewyn's most common pairing is with Erinys. The game strongly suggests it since Lewyn's conversation with Erinys in Chapter 4 makes them fall in love instantly. This pairing gives Fee an excellent speed growth, Adept, and Critical. Since Fee always has Follow-Up (inheriting it from Erinys), she becomes an even better combat unit. While she would have higher strength with a physical father like Naoise, Lewyn is still a solid choice thanks to the skills he passes down.

More importantly, this pairing makes Ced incredibly powerful. Ced's base stats are excellent regardless of his father, but with Lewyn as his father, he joins with the Forseti tome. His speed and HP growths rise over 100%, and his combat capabilities become incredible. Much like Lewyn, a Ced wielding Forseti can fight entire armies without getting hit and counter both melee and ranged enemies. He also becomes one of the easiest ways to kill enemy Holy Weapon users, who are more common in the second generation of Genealogy. While he still suffers from being unmounted, no pairing can fix that.

Another common pairing for Lewyn is with Tailtiu. This gives both Tine and Arthur Adept and Critical, increasing their combat potential. Typically, they would only have Wrath, but Lewyn gives them more options. While passing down the more reliable Follow-Up would be better, Adept is the next best option. Lewyn also passes down Forseti Holy Blood to both children, significantly increasing their HP and speed growths. This improves their durability and Adept activation rates.

Most importantly, Arthur inherits the Forseti tome and can use it without investment. This is especially useful because Arthur joins in Chapter 6 – the second generation's first chapter. No other pairing gives the player a Holy Weapon this early. Also, while Arthur is unmounted before promotion, he gains a mount upon promotion. He will never have Follow-Up without the Follow-Up Ring, but even without it, Forseti allows him to kill most enemies with ease. He is much easier to train while wielding the Forseti, too, thanks to the tome's high might and stat bonuses. After promotion, Arthur will be among the best combat units in the second generation. No other Holy Weapon user in the second generation has both 1-2 range and a mount, so Arthur with Forseti fills a unique niche. He becomes a version of Lewyn without the low movement problem, as long as he is trained.

The third most common pairing for Lewyn is with Silvia. Since these units are both frail, the increase to HP growth granted by Holy Blood makes them a bit more durable over time, and the increased speed growth will bolster their avoidance as they gain levels. They also both gain Critical, improving their combat a little. That said, neither Lene nor Coirpre excel at fighting. Lene is a dancer, so her stats are mostly redundant regardless of her father, and Coirpre can only use staves before promotion.

With Lewyn as his father, Coirpre inherits the Forseti tome and can use it after he promotes. He is a worse user of it than Ced, joining later and requiring investment to even use the damn thing. He is also worse than Arthur because he lacks a mount. However, this pairing is the third and final way to access Forseti in the second generation. Coirpre enjoys all the benefits Forseti Lewyn had, including increased survivability and excellent damage output. The drawback is that he remains unmounted and can only fight after promotion, making this pairing the worst choice among the three.

Lewyn's other pairings are not very good because they prevent him from passing down the Forseti tome. Only male children inherit Lewyn's major Forseti Holy Blood. Arthur, Ced, and Coirpre are the only male child units in the second generation who can use tomes, so they are the only Forseti candidates. Lewyn still passes down Adept and Critical in other pairings, as well as growth bonuses from Forseti Holy Blood. However, the Forseti tome is by far the most important.

Brief summary

Overall, Lewyn is an excellent combat unit in the first generation but suffers from lacking a mount. His Forseti Holy Blood and Forseti tome are his most significant traits. They make him one of the most important fathers. Pairing up Lewyn with Erinys, Tailtiu or Silvia gives the player access to a Forseti user in the second generation. Forseti is among the most potent weapons in the game and makes its wielder a combat prodigy, making Lewyn and whoever inherits his tome very fun to use.

Personality and character

Before the Battle of Belhalla, Lewyn's primary concern was for the common man. He has no patience for the power struggles of the nobility and for the harm caused to the people in the crossfire, and it was for precisely this reason that he left Silesse to travel the world, protecting the people of the world from avaricious nobles when he encountered them.[4] As a result of his experiences with Myos and Daccar he distrusted nobles and royalty by default, particularly if their actions proved detrimental to the common folk even if just through ignorance of the reality of the situation, but would quickly warm to them if they proved to be decent people, as with Sigurd.[5] He kept his identity as the Silessean prince a secret, working under the guise of a mere bard, until Erinys blew his cover by informing Sigurd of his true identity. Where the security of commoners was not a concern, he was a capricious individual intent on relaxing and escaping trouble where possible, and a mild womanizer. When he was younger, he developed a romantic interest in the Angelic Knight Annand; as he matured, however, he found himself instead interested in Erinys, Annand's sister. In addition to his outward appearance, it appears that he was also highly intelligent; as observed by Libra, Lewyn's Einherjar incarnation was capable of sensing that something was amiss about his ongoing existence.[6]

After the Battle of Belhalla, however, Lewyn's personality abruptly shifted as a result of Forseti possessing him. While still strongly concerned with the protection of the people of Jugdral, his focus was now concerned with the bigger picture of the fight against Loptous and the Grannvale Empire. He was highly reluctant to engage with his own past, to the point of avoiding and shunning his own children and renouncing any claim to being the king of Silesse. Though an excellent mentor and advisor to Seliph, he was not above fiercely rebuking him when he did not agree with his opinions, particularly if Seliph was reluctant to fight for whatever reason.[7] Forseti's revival and possession of Lewyn required that parts of his original personality be surrendered, and so at the war's conclusion and Forseti's departure, he was incapable of returning to his original life as Silesse's king.[8]

English

Lewyn

As of Fire Emblem Awakening. Variant of Lewin, derived from the Old English Leofwine, "dear friend".[11] It also invokes the Welsh wyn, "fair, white, blessed", a common suffix of Welsh names. Likely changed from "Levin" to avert confusion with the unrelated Levin Sword.

English
(unofficial)

Levin

Widely known by this name prior to the international release of Awakening, and used in the Genealogy and Thracia fan translations. From Levin, a common surname of Jewish origin indicating descent from the Biblical tribe of Levi. Etymologically unrelated to the Levin Sword.

  2. Inferred; the Thracia 776 timeline states that the Agustrian war occurrs in Grann 758, at which point Lewyn is stated to have been on the run for two years.
  3. "Lewyn: Hey Ced, you found me out. How've you been?
Ced: Father, you've got some nerve! You have no idea how long I've been looking for you! Do you have any idea how many years have past since you left Silesse!?
Lewyn: Hmm... good question. Hey, how's Erinys doing?
Ced: H, how dare you! Mother is dead!! I wanted her to see you just one last time before she passed away, so I set out to find you.
" — Lewyn and Ced, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  4. "If I go back, I have to succumb to the will of my late father and succeed the throne. But my uncles would never have it. One slip up and there'd be mutiny, like there is here. You know who suffers then? The people." — Lewyn, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  5. "Lewyn: I take it you're that Sigurd guy. You must have an awful lot of free time to be runnin' around startin' wars all over the place!
Sigurd: Huh? I don't follow. What're you so angry about?
Lewyn: Try putting yourself into these people's shoes for a second! They're just tryin' to make a livin' here. Then you show up, flashin' your shiny swords around...
Sigurd: Hmm... I see your point. Geez, I feel awful about the Agustrian people.
Lewyn: Well, talk is cheap. If you really feel so bad, why don't you pack up and leave?
Sigurd: Alright then. Look, I'll go consult with my people.
Lewyn: W-w-whoa! You serious about pullin' out!?
Sigurd: Yeah, I've been tossing the idea around myself, and you just helped me make up my mind. I'm through fighting. I've got to try and settle this with King Chagall peacefully.
Lewyn: Ah... that'd be a complete and utter waste of your time. He wouldn't listen to you. And if Grannvale pulls out now, all the citizens who helped you guys out'll be tossed in jail! Doesn't that bother you?
Sigurd: Well, um... of course it does! But... didn't I, er...
Lewyn:Hahaha! You're alright, Sigurd. Look, how about I join up with you guys?
" — Lewyn and Sigurd, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  6. "Phantoms or not, minds this great cannot fool themselves forever... Part of them must understand what they truly are..." — Libra, Fire Emblem Awakening
  7. "Seliph! Get over it!! This is war. If you can't handle the heat, then you belong back at Tirnanog!" — Lewyn, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  8. "This means that there's no doubt that the Lewyn in the second half is basically the same person as Lewyn in the first half. However, he's given a part of himself to Forseti... And, when the Holy War ends, Forseti actually leaves, but because of the exchange, Lewyn can't live as Lewyn so to speak, and cannot retain his original existence so he cannot go back to Silesse and take the crown.
That is why this part is a discordance where the dragon race who had a law to not intervene with the human race did what they are usually not supposed to do—saving a person who was supposed to die."
