Having arrived at the Hoshidan capital, Corrin and Azura talk about how their journey has led them back there, with Azura stating that the ordeal will soon be over, and that victory will be theirs if they take control of the capital and seize the throne room; Corrin brings up that they're about to conquer the castle that Azura grew up in and once called home and offers to do the fighting while she hides somewhere safe until they're finished, to which Azura states that she won't hide--she didn't side with Nohr just to lose her nerve and turn tail at the pivotal moment, and vows to be by Corrin's side to the bitter end. Azura states that ending the war will benefit everyone Nohrian and Hoshidan alike, and that she'll stick by Corrin's side not just for Corrin or the world, but for the Hoshidan siblings she loves so dearly, and that's why she can bear her burden; Azura then brings up Takumi's disappearance, to which Corrin states that they do not know what to think and it being too much to process at that moment, to which Azura reveals that their troops searched the area Takumi was last seen in thoroughly and didn't find even a single clue as to where he may have gone, as if Takumi simply vanished. Azura states that they shouldn't tell Sakura about Takumi's disappearance at that moment as she's got enough to deal with at that moment, to which Corrin states that there will be plenty of time to break Sakura's heart later; Xander arrives on the scene and asks to speak with Corrin, and reveals that Garon has given them their orders to invade the capital immediately, asking Corrin to prepare the troops as well as themselves, to which Corrin states that they understand.

We then witness the Nohrian army led by Garon march into the capital, with the locals taking notice and acting scared; one of the local boys notices Corrin and calls them a traitor, prompting an old man to insult Corrin for returning after what they did to Mikoto, followed by an old woman revealing that her husband died in that explosion along with Mikoto and denounces the Nohrians as monsters. As Corrin resolves to stay strong, Iago insultingly asks some of the locals to get out of his way, killing an old woman and prompting a shocked reaction from Corrin; Iago asks Corrin to rest easy, and vows to personally destroy anyone who speaks ill about them, with Hans daring any Hoshidan to cross the Nohrians and have their body drop, attacking a young boy in the process. Corrin starts to plead against the cruelty, but Azura reveals that Garon is close behind them, and there's no telling what he'll do if Corrin stands up for the Hoshidans.

Having arrived in the area of the castle, Iago reveals that there weren't any guards in their way and that they must be in defense mode, deducing that the guards are all indoors; Xander reveals that the Nohrian army is strong enough to surround the entire castle and might be enough to secure surrender without raising a blade, to which Iago states that that approach will not do--this is the Nohrians' chance to completely eliminate the Hoshidans, stating that they do not deserve the honor of a quick and clean surrender. Iago states that, as long as the Hoshidans live, those that follow them will never stop fighting, and that this is the perfect time to eliminate all of the Hoshidan royalty and stake their claim, to which Xander states is low even by Iago's standards; Iago then asks Garon about his plan and if he can proceed, to which Garon simply tells him to kill all the Hoshidan royalty, to which Iago states that he expected that response from Garon and proceeds to thank him. Iago then reveals the plans for the invasion of the castle, with his men attacking from the rear while Corrin's forces go in through the front, to which Corrin reluctantly agrees to Iago's plan, followed by Iago stating that their forces will meet in the throne room; Xander states that he doesn't like Iago's plan any more than Corrin does, but that they must stay strong and any faltering means the world pays the price. Xander then brings up how Camilla once told him that Corrin once asked her where justice lies, to which Corrin states that she didn't have any more answers than they do; Xander tells them that justice is an illusion and that there is no light path always leading to good nor is there a dark path leading to evil, and believing otherwise is to see only half the picture and all that matters are their own choices, especially the hard ones. Xander also states that letting innocents die is a tragedy, but letting the chance for peace slip away is likewise, and there is no such thing as a clean victory when lives are on the line, asking Corrin to desire to do what they think is right and protect their loved ones while seeing their vision of a peaceful future to its end; Xander states that if they let evil men to let their vision take precedence over their own vision, they lose, prompting Corrin to agree with Xander and asks the gods to give their strength. Preparations take place at this point; the battle begins once preparations are complete.

At the end of the first player phase, Azama notices Corrin's army and alerts Hinoka, who begrudgingly thinks about Corrin; Setsuna asks Hinoka if they're going to fight, to which Hinoka vows not to let Castle Shrasagi fall even to Corrin, and asks the Hoshidan army not to let a single person breach the throne room, stating that she's a sorry excuse for a princess if she fails. As Setsuna and Azama vow to stick with and protect Hinoka, Hinoka states that she's proud to have Azama and Setsuna at her side, thanking them for everything and states that they're all in this battle together.

(Cutscene: "Vs. Hinoka") We start to witness Hinoka flying aboard her pegasus with the sun to her back, then flips off the back of her pegasus and spins her naginata fast enough to keep herself airborne; Hinoka states that she's spent her whole life looking for Corrin, and as her pegasus catches her, Hinoka points toward Corrin and states that she's found them.

Once the battle ends, we witness Hinoka, Azama, and Setsuna lay exhausted in front of Corrin and Camilla; as Hinoka mulls over how she lost control of the castle, Corrin asks Hinoka to lay down her weapon and states that the battle is over, to which Hinoka asks Corrin to kill her promptly if she is to die and won't beg for mercy provided her remaining soldiers are spared. Azama begs Hinoka to not die on him as she's a princess of Hoshido, while Setsuna vows to die along with Hinoka, to which Hinoka asks Azama and Setsuna to stay strong for her; Corrin states that they have no choice but to kill Hinoka, as Garon would never allow an enemy leader to survive and that they must do what they have to do, to which Hinoka asks Corrin to make her death quick. Corrin draws out their Grim Yato and raises it over Hinoka, then proceeds to deliberately miss striking her to Azama's shock; Setsuna asks why Corrin spared Hinoka, to which Corrin asks Hinoka to take her retainers and hide while they fake her death, then asks Hinoka for her weapon as proof to Garon she was defeated. Hinoka asks Corrin if they are really going to let them go, to which Corrin states that they are not Garon and that the last thing they want is meaningless bloodshed, and that they will not kill Hinoka's remaining soldiers just as long as she leaves at that moment; Hinoka pleads to join Corrin at their side and states that she knew Corrin was on her side all along, and that they can end the war before things go further if she explains things to Ryoma, to which Corrin states that they can't do that--there's no telling what Garon would do if he found out they let her live. Corrin states that they know things won't be easy, but they need Hinoka to head far away from the castle and stay hidden until the war is over, and that everything will be OK if she chooses to live; as Hinoka mulls over how she'll flee when everything she holds dear is on the brink of ruin, Camilla puts her axe to Hinoka's throat and vows to slice it open if she moves even a tiny bit. Camilla, reiterating that Corrin is her brother/sister and not Hinoka's, chose to spare Hinoka's life and she supports their choice as long as Hinoka keeps her end of the bargain. Camilla vows to let her axe slip up if Hinoka causes Corrin harm or refuses to run away, prompting Hinoka to sneer toward Camilla; Camilla tells Hinoka that if she keeps up her sneer, Sakura will be terrified when next they meet, prompting shock from Hinoka over the fact that Sakura is still alive, to which Camilla confirms as she retreats her axe--and reiterates that Sakura will stay alive as long as Hinoka keeps Corrin safe, asking Hinoka to hide or otherwise think about what Sakura would feel if she found out Hinoka was dead, to which Hinoka finally agrees to flee. After an exchange between Camilla and Hinoka about similarities between Hinoka and Corrin, Camilla bids Hinoka farewell and leaves; Hinoka then tells Corrin that Ryoma is waiting inside the castle, and that she believes Corrin's desire to avoid bloodshed and asks them not to kill Ryoma; Hinoka states that she couldn't bear to lose Ryoma after having lost Mikoto, as his death would tear the heart out of Hoshido and she wouldn't survive, to which Corrin vows not to kill Ryoma and will find a way to protect him. Corrin then states that they knows the terrible things Nohr has done to Hoshido and its royal family and that they can never hope to be forgiven because of that, then states that they hopes that they can one day come together as siblings again once the war ends and peace is restored to the world; Corrin states that Hinoka is free to cry and scream at them and to tell them that their wish can never come true, but reiterates that they will never let go of that dream before leaving the scene. As Hinoka bids Corrin farewell, Azama states that he's grateful that she escaped that ordeal with her life, to which Setsuna states that it's time to leave or else they'll surely be caught the longer they stay; Hinoka agrees that it's time that they move, then states that Corrin was right about one thing, she indeed cannot forgive the Nohrian army for starting the war and winning it like cowards, but also believes Corrin's wish to unite as siblings in a world without war is something she also believes in, then begs Ryoma to not hurt Corrin and kill Corrin's dream.

Summary

The Dragon Veins in this chapter are stated to have the effect "Slows fliers, speeds others. But Hinoka...". They are located as follows:

  • Column 7, row 21: Two spaces west of a Tiger Spirit/Steel Club Oni Chieftain
  • Column 13, row 17: Three squares west, three squares south of a Tiger Spirit Onmyoji (Normal/Hard only)
  • Column 12, row 15: Four squares west, one square south of the same on Onmyoji, just within Azama's Hexing Rod range (Lunatic only)
  • Column 19, row 16: Three squares east, two squares south of the aforementioned Tiger Spirit Onmyoji
  • Column 14, row 4: Three squares south, two squares east of Hinoka's position (Normal only)
  • Column 12, row 1: Hinoka's position. This vein has the reverse effect of the others (speeds fliers, slows others); Hinoka activates it whenever no other Dragon Vein is currently in effect.
  • Column 10, row 4: Three squares south, two squares west of Hinoka's position
  • Column 9, row 10: One square south, one square east of a Rabbit Spirit Onmyoji (Normal only)

The Dragon Veins grant/inflict a Movement bonus/penalty equal to half of the class's base movement, rounded down; it does not factor in boosts from Boots, skills or the like. The effect lasts for two turns before wearing off.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

A major factor in strategizing for this chapter is the Dragon Vein and its effects. Generally, the player must make the most out of each Dragon Vein they can activate; each one can only be used once, and they will only last for two turns before wearing off. Cavalry units in general are fantastic here, in particular Xander and Leo, as not only are they excellent units in their own rights, but their high mobility plus the bonus from each vein will allow them to easily reach another one within two turns, keeping the effect going throughout.

Hinoka will activate her Dragon Vein (speeds up fliers, slows others) on enemy phase whenever another is not currently in effect. Often this will mean she will activate one on turn 1, but it is possible to avoid this entirely by activating one of your own; if a mounted unit starts in the upper-leftmost starting position and has a Pair Up partner that boosts movement, they can reach a Dragon Vein on the very first turn, cutting off Hinoka from using hers. Be wary that this will place said unit within range of three Onmyoji. This unit can be kept safe by having a high resistance unit such as Kaze block them off, as there is one space that they need to move through to reach the first unit, and this can be reached through Azura's singing.

When dealing with Setsuna and her squad, it can be advantageous to have a Dragon Vein active. Without any Dragon Vein's influence, the attack range of both her and the units nearby perfectly overlaps with the range of Azama's Hexing Rod. By activating a Dragon Vein, their movement is increased, extending their threat zone beyond the Hexing Rod's range, allowing the player to bait them out without the threat of having their maximum HP cut in half for the rest of the mission.

Your basic goal for the first several turns is simply to survive the onslaught of Falcon Knights and Kinshi Knights that will pound you. If Niles has good strength and/or a well-forged bow, he can one-shot Falcon Knights and make your life so much easier. His reliability against Kinshi Knights is a lot sketchier since many of them pack Bowbreaker, but Xander or a fast mage can do well against them. Once you've survived, send a bulky green unit to deal with Azama and his companions. Azama's Counter only triggers if you initiate, so you can run him through on enemy phase. Doing so triggers another horde of fliers, but if your unit is tanky enough, you should be fine. Once they're all dead, you can bring down Hinoka.
