— Yen'fay

Ghost of a Blade is the twenty-first paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. It is one of a group often called the "SpotPass paralogues", as the chapter is unlocked via a SpotPass interaction and also requires beating chapter 25 in order to play. This chapter is unlockable via SpotPass starting June 14, 2012 in the Japanese version, March 28, 2013 in the North American version, and June 13-14, 2013 in the PAL version.

In this chapter, the Shepherds arrive at a Chon'sin burial site infested with Risen investigating reports of Yen'fay sightings in the area. The reports prove true, but in a roundabout sort of way...

Plot

Main article: Ghost of a Blade/Script

Having gathered inside a tomb in the far southwest of Valm, Robin tells Say'ri he/she sees some sort of ruins ahead; Say'ri reveals that the "ruins" are actually a tomb made to honor the spirits of Chon'sin's greatest warriors, wherein lie the warriors who built up Chon'sin from the earth--not with stone or mortar, but with steel. Say'ri reveals that any true child of Chon'sin knows their titles like family; she the goes on to reveal some of those titles as including "The Holy Sword", "The Demon's Edge", and "The Red Hilt", then revealing that the bearers of those titles struggled all their lives and found respite only in the grave. Say'ri reveals that the tomb is now a place overtaken by Risen, and neither living nor dead can know peace; Frederick reveals the Shepherds have heard ill rumors about this area as of late, as townsfolk are claiming they've seen Yen'fay roaming the grounds, to which Say'ri says she, of all people, know Yen'fay's death was certain--the dead do not return, and to dream otherwise is the provenance of fools. As Say'ri states Yen'fay is gone, Frederick tells Say'ri that she may say the dead do not return, yet asks about the Risen--if the Risen are possible, then Yen'fay might be as well; Say'ri cuts Frederick off and reveals it's cruelty to place such mad thoughts in her head, yet if Yen'fay did escape the reaper's clutch she'd dearly love to speak with him once more. Preparations take place at this point; during this phase, it is possible to find Yen'fay standing on the field as an NPC unit.

Once preparations are complete, the Yen'fay standing in the area will reveal that this world's Yen'fay is dead and he no better; he states that he hopes to offer his blade to this world's Say'ri in the hopes it buys peace for all. The chapter begins at this point. Should Say'ri speak to Yen'fay, she'll joyously react and reveals that what's going on cannot be happening, then asks Yen'fay how he's alive; Yen'fay asks Say'ri to forgive him as he's not the Yen'fay she knew, to which Say'ri asks how he can say such when she sees him stand before her, to which Yen'fay says it's the truth--he's Yen'fay, yet not the Yen'fay this Say'ri knew as her brother, as he does not belong in this world. Say'ri asks a question that most people can't understand, to which Yen'fay leaves while the question's being asked, to which Say'ri begs Yen'fay not to leave the area. The player may now control Yen'fay at this point.

Once the battle ends, Yen'fay gives a silent reaction, to which Say'ri asks him to explain himself--he died yet stands before her, with Say'ri asking him how he could be a different Yen'fay to the one she knew; Robin brings up the possibility this Yen'fay's from a different world or a different time, something the Shepherds have had their fair share of lately. Yen'fay reveals Robin is right, to which Say'ri asks Yen'fay if he's from the future, to which Yen'fay reveals he's from a different future with a different past--a past most terribly cruel; Yen'fay revealed that his life lost all meaning when he failed to protect that which he held most dear. Yen'fay says he did not desire to come to this world, yet fate seems to have a taste for irony; Say'ri asks Yen'fay about which he held most dear, to which Robin figures out Yen'fay is talking about his world's Say'ri, with Yen'fay confirming. Say'ri asks Yen'fay how he lived in place of her, to which Yen'fay says he was a weak fool and could not make the sacrifice required to keep his world's Say'ri safe, and says he's pleased to know this world's Yen'fay was made of sterner mettle. Say'ri curses out this world's Yen'fay and his mettle, saying he had no right to make that choice for her--she wishes this world's Yen'fay made the same choice Yen'fay did, that this world's Yen'fay was still happy and free; Yen'fay reveals that to be a sentiment he knows all too well. Yen'fay tells Say'ri he's not her brother nor is she his sister, but asks to atone for his mistakes of his own past by dedicating his blade to her.

Website summary

Yen'fay, the former Chon'sin dynast who offered his life to save his sister, Say'ri, in battle, lies dead and buried. However, rumors have reached Chrom's ear that a ghost has been seen near his tomb...[1]

As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started. The returning characters list also does not include any characters recruitable in other paralogues, as the player may not have taken on any other available paralogue chapters yet. The list also does not include any bonus units, as they are recruitable at the player's discretion.

Trivia

  • Warriors' Tomb is one of five locations on the world map that connects to only one other location (in this case, only to The Demon's Ingle), and as such is a dead end. The other four are the Outrealm Gate, Plegia Castle, Law's End, and Grima.
    • Warriors Tomb is in the same location as Ram Village in Gaiden.
  • The fact that Warriors' Tomb is a Chon'sin grave potentially implies that the Chon'sin homeland may be around the far southwestern region of the Valmese continent.
  • Of the five SpotPass paralogues centered around a character portrayed to have apparently died along the main story path, this is the only one where it is made clear that the version of the character belonging to the game's primary timeline did actually die at the time of said character's apparent death.
  • This is the only chapter in the vanilla Awakening game where Chrom is only required to appear as a character to be deployed in the chapter; Chrom only plays a role outside the main battle in the chapter's alternate ending where Yen'fay does not survive the chapter's events.
    • It is also one of only two chapters where Chrom potentially plays no story role even when factoring in DLC chapters, the other being Apotheosis.
