After its reveal in the Fire Emblem Nintendo Direct, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia received promotion online and in magazines like Famitsu. The game largely appears as it does after release though early screenshots reveal that the game went through some slight changes, mostly textual, shortly before release.
Pre-release history
Echoes: Shadows of Valentia had one of the shortest pre-release news cycles of any Fire Emblem series game, being announced only three months before the game's Japanese release, and only four months before the game's international release.
Initial reveal (January 18, 2017)
An Echoes: Shadows of Valentia trailer opened the Fire Emblem Nintendo direct.
General coverage (Early 2017)
In Japan, Echoes: Shadows of Valentia was available in two special editions: the more basic Limited Edition that contained the game, a soundtrack CD, a download code for early downloadable content, and a Fire Emblem Cipher card featuring Alm. The Valentia Complete edition included all of the Limited Edition's contents, as well as another Cipher card featuring Celica, a copy of the Valentia Artbook, a collection of concept art from the game, and a Blu-Ray copy of the Fire Emblem HD Movie Collection, featuring high-definition cutscenes from Echoes: Shadows of Valentia itself, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, and Fates.[1]
Outside of Japan, the game has received one Limited Edition, featuring the game itself, the Valentia art book, a reversible cover featuring the original Fire Emblem Gaiden artwork, a pixel art pin set, and a sound selection CD.[2] The international Limited Edition unfortunately does not include the Fire Emblem HD Movie Collection, DLC codes, or trading cards from the Japanese Editions. Though the pixel art pin set is exclusive to international Limited Editions. Additionally, the European Limited Edition comes bundled with one Alm amiibo and one Celica amiibo.
Echoes: Shadows of Valentia was the first title in the Fire Emblem series to be localized for Chinese markets, featuring both Traditional and Simplified Chinese versions of the script. The announcement of the Chinese version, released on February 12th 2017, also confirmed that the spinoff Fire Emblem Warriors would receive Chinese localizations.[3] This follows the introduction of the Fire Emblem series to the South Korean market with Fates.
Leak (Approx. April 3, 2017)
Shortly before Japanese release the game leaked online.
Differences to final
Known differences are minor text changes, both Japanese footage and English footage has some slight differences to final. It seems minor touches were still being made to some menus at the time that certain screenshots and footage were taken.

ATK is called ATC in early Japanese footage. This is somewhat notable as many Japanese Fire Emblem games used the ATC abbreviation until this point. Interestingly the change to ATK, and thus as it appears in final, was reflected in footage released very shortly after the direct.

The class name for Social Knights (Cavaliers) was written differently. The name "Sナイト", S Knight, is an abbreviation of Social Knight used in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and some menus of Mystery of the Emblem.

Some early English screenshots did not yet have TEC changed to SKILL and LUC to LCK. |
Oddities
The English version of "A Master Class in Strategy" trailer has several oddities compared to the final game; these may be the result of the use of developer tools, such as a debug menu, instead of actual intended differences in the content of the game.
Silque is shown as a Sage, a class she cannot normally become in any final version of the game.
Mae is shown casting the spell Excalibur, a spell she cannot learn in any final version of the game.
Enemies in one section of the trailer appear to mistakenly use the player faction name, "Alm's army". The selected enemy is also level 20, an unusually high level for this point in the game. |
