Ensnared (Japanese: しかけられた罠 A Set Trap) is the sixth chapter in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. Roy and his army stop in Castle Thria to rest, where they are attacked by Marquess Thria's advisor.

Plot

Main article: Ensnared/Script

The chapters start with the sudden appearance of a young thief, Cath. Although she has just broken into Castle Thria, she is already complaining about the strict security in the castle. She is thinking of going north, when she hears footsteps and promptly hides.

The footsteps Cath heard belong to Wagner, the Marquess' advisor, and a soldier. Wagner inquires about the castle's current conditions, and the soldier reports that all men are ready. Wagner nods and orders to attack and kill the Lycian Army, in the same fashion as he did with Lord Orun, the Marquess of Thria. The only condition to the attack is to spare Princess Guinivere, as she, together with the Silver Wolf's granddaughter, will be an excelent offer that Bern will not be able to refuse.

Once Wagner and the soldier leave, Cath reappears and comments on how things have suddenly become interesting, then leaves for somewhere unknown.

Meanwhile, Roy, who had decided to visit Lord Orun while passing through Thria, listens to Merlinus' contented remarks only with half a mind, as he is more interested on Lord Orun's advisor. Merlinus asks what is bothering him, and Roy replies that Wagner's attitude and the prohibition to approach Lord Orun due to his illness do not feel right to him. Clearly not having thought of it before, Merlinus now quickly agrees with his lord, just as Saul and Dorothy enter the room and inform that there is a considerable number of soldiers out there, which could mean they are being spied on. Roy is not happy to hear so, although he had been thinking of the possibility.

All of a sudden, Roy shouts, apparently to the air, demanding the strange person to show themselves. With a cheerful disposition, Cath leaves the shadows and immediately warns Roy about Wagner's ambush. When he claims that Lord Orun would never do such a thing, Cath nonchalantly tells him that the lord was assassinated by Wagner himself, and that he plans to turn them to Bern so he can join. Merlinus is wary of Cath and questions the veracity of her words, to what Cath replies that is up to them.

Guinivere quietly asks Roy what they can do if what Cath is saying turns out to be true. Roy says they will pretend to leave; if Wagner wants to betray them, he will do anything to keep them inside the castle. Cath recommends to use the north room to escape, as this leads directly to the courtyard, and then leaves, wishing them good luck.

Roy and his army are leaving the castle, when Wagner catches up and asks what they are doing. Roy responds they have received a message and so they must leave at once. Wagner exclaims that Lord Orun would never forgive him if he were not to offer a place to stay and begs Roy to stay one night at least. Roy tells him not to worry, as he can explain the situation to Lord Orun himself, but Wagner insists on not bothering the lord's fragile health condition.

Roy replies that then he has no reason to stay here, prompting Wagner to show his true colors and confirming Cath's warnings. Saul informs Roy that there is no way to escape; Roy's reply to that is ordering to take the castle by force.

Inside a room, a girl with strange clothes hears the noises and wonders what is happening outside, while Cath, taking advantage of the confusion, enters the battlefield to loot the castle.

After defeating Wagner, Roy finds this unknown girl and asks her what she is doing here. The girl, Sue, turns out to be the granddaughter of the Silver Wolf, the greatest warrior of Sacae. Roy mentions having heard of him, but he still does not understand what a girl from Sacae is doing in Lycia. Sue explains that, after Bern invaded them, her tribe decided to fight back, and so, women and children were sent out to Lycia for protection.

However, another clan of Sacae betrayed them; the Djute clan turned to Bern's side and attacked them. Sue herself made it to Thria, where Lord Orun offered her help. Shortly after, though, Wagner assassinated him and took her as a prisoner.

After telling her story, Sue asks Roy if they are fighting against Bern. Roy answers that yes, as they were invaded by Bern as well. Sue then resolves to join them, stating she wants to rescue her grandfather and avenge Lord Orun. Roy is unsure of it at first, as they are headed to Ostia which is in the opposite direction to Sacae, but Sue tells him not to worry, as no matter where they are, Father Sky and Mother Earth will watch over them.

Things seems to have calmed back... and then, Merlinus comes with terrible news: a rebellion has broken out in Ostia. A bewildered Roy asks him if Lilina is all right, and Merlinus' answer is even worse: Lilina has been taken as a hostage. The loyal soldiers are still standing out against the rebel group, thus buying some time for Lady Lilina.

Roy and the Lycia Army immediately resume their travel to Ostia, now to rescue Lilina and Ostia itself; time is running short for everyone involved, especially for the young marchioness.

Beginning log

After taking Saul, a priest of the Elimine Church, and Dorothy, his bodyguard, into his ranks, Roy led his forces through the mountains into the territory of Thria, located just to the southeast of Ostia. Thria was governed by Lord Orun, a cousin to the late Marquess Ostia known for his peaceful personality. Orun's home castle seemed to be a safe place for Roy to rest. However, Bern's malicious grip had extended to these lands as well…

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This is the first chapter in which the player can choose units and manage equipment. From now on, there is a limited number of characters per chapter, and Roy must be used in all of them. The options given by the preparation screen are "Pick Units", "Trade", "Save", "Map", and "Play Chapter." "Pick Units" is self-explanatory, as "Save" and "Play Chapter". "Map" allows the player to look at the battlefield, to change the starting positions of their characters, and to check enemy units. "Trade" has several suboptions: "Trade", "Discard", "Storage", "Item", and "Shop". "Trade" and "Discard" are exactly what they say. "Storage" is for depositing in and/or removing items from the convoy. In "Item", all items and weapons are listed together, allowing the character to take something from another person without using the option "Trade". If "Shop" is chosen, the character will have access to a small shop, where the most basic weapons (Iron Sword, Iron Axe, Iron Lance, Iron Bow, Fire, and Heal) are sold at a slightly higher price than in the maps.

Recommended characters for this chapter are Chad and any mounted unit, as there are several chests that are dispersed over the map. If the player bought door keys on last chapter, the process will be a lot faster. They will still need Chad, for he is the only one who can open chests. The mounted unit is for carrying Chad, as he should be left near the starting point. This is due to Cath arriving in turn 5 and opening the doors and chests. To avoid this, the player can either make Chad steal her lockpick, or kill her. Cath will not attack any playable unit.

If the player is interested in recruiting Cath, they can leave Roy behind too. Roy must talk to her three times before she will join. After talking to her, though, Roy has to be carried to the third room in the left side, where Sue has been imprisoned. If the player is interested in using her, Roy should take a bow with him for trading with her.

The two rooms that are near of the starting point are empty when open. However, after two turns, reinforcements will arrive. If the player is not that interested in gaining experience, they should not open them. The same goes for the two rooms near the boss, although one of them has a chest with an Unlock staff. Also, once ALL playable units have crossed a certain point of the map (at the level of the doors of the second room), six enemies will arrive from south.

If the player choose the middle way, they should put their sturdiest units in the front, as the enemies will attack en masse. After they have been dealt with, the chapter becomes quite easy. The other enemies can be picked one by one; the mages in the boss' room will not move until someone is in their range of attack, while the knights will not attack until the characters are one or two squares near them.

The boss, Wagner, is a shaman, which means danger for almost all units. As a shaman, he wields dark tomes, which are the most inaccurate but the most powerful spells in the magic area. Also, dark magic has an advantage against anima magic; because of this, Lugh is not recommended. The player should use their fastest and most accurate units to take Wagner down, as he is quite fast for a low-leveled shaman. Once the boss is defeated, Roy can seize the throne and the chapter will end.
