Munster had a great number of children seized and sent to the shrine in Miletos. I was unable to prevent it... I'm no hero, sir. I'm a coward if anything.
— Ced, on Seliph's praise of his efforts

Ced (Japanese: セティ Sety) is the prince of Silesse, the son of the errant King Lewyn and the late Queen Erinys, and a full-blooded descendant of Ced, the Wind Crusader for whom he was named. Raised in Silesse during its occupation by the Grannvale Empire, when his mother fell gravely ill he departed Silesse to find his missing father, to bring him to see her before she died. His way took him through Munster, where he witnessed the suffering of the people and swore to do what he could to help. He joined the Magi, a then-struggling band of warriors devoted to fighting the oppression and helping the people, and led them to greater success in opposing the Munster occupation and in saving children from the child hunts. He was later involved in the liberation armies of both Leif and Seliph.

In his appearance in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, if Erinys was not married in the course of the first generation, Ced's role is filled by Hawk.

Biography

Note: This biography adheres to the canon defined by Thracia 776, which dictates that Lewyn was Ced and Fee's father, and all references to his parentage are in accordance with this. In the gameplay of Genealog of the Holy War, Ced's parentage remains entirely at the player's discretion; certain elements of Ced's backstory in Genealogy of the Holy War, such as his father having disappeared and left Erinys behind, are the same regardless of his father's identity.

As certain details of the events of the Thracian siege of Munster differ between Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, the Thracia 776 version is given here, since its telling of the battle is the more in-depth of the two.

Search for his father

Ced and his sister, Fee, grew up in Silesse during its occupation by the forces of the Grannvale Empire. The royal family spent the occupation living in the remote Tófa Castle in Silesse's far north, under the protection of Silessean rebels opposing the Empire.[2] Lewyn was present for at least part of their childhood, but eventually disappeared for reasons unknown to his family.[3] After several years, Erinys suffered a terminal illness which slowly killed her. Believing Lewyn to be the only one able to heal Erinys, Ced left Silesse on a mission to find his father, leaving Fee behind.[4]

During his search, Ced entered the city of Munster to follow up a rumor that Lewyn had been there within half a year prior. He was deeply moved by the plight of Munster's people under Raydrik's rule and refused to let their suffering continue, and so put off his search for Lewyn to aid them.[5] He encountered and became involved with the Magi, a rebel band which had recently suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Grannvale's forces, and became its leader and single-handedly turned its fortunes around, turning them into a force capable of successfully resisting the Empire.[6] During his time at the helm of the Magi, he took one of its members, Asbel, as his apprentice and taught him wind magic.

Hero of Munster

In Grann 776, around the time that Leif had been captured by Raydrik, Ced led a Magi invasion of the Munster palace dungeon. He tasked Brighton, Machyua and Lara with rescuing those imprisoned on the dungeon floor, while he and Asbel searched for imprisoned children. Once confirming the children were safe, he instructed Asbel with finding and assisting Leif. During this time he was approached by Karin, deployed to find him, who informed him of Erinys's death two months prior. He nonetheless declined Karin's request to return to Silesse, but instead entrusted her with the Ced Scroll. Shortly afterward, he led a small team of reinforcements to aid Leif's escape through the streets of Munster.

Over six months later, Leif returned to Munster at the helm of the new Leonster liberation army, on a mission to bring it down once and for all while his cousin Seliph fought in Conote. News of Leif's approach provoked one last attempt to flee by the citizens of Munster, which Ced and the Magi assisted by fighting countless skirmishes with the Munster army throughout the city.[7] During the battles he was approached by Saias, who offered to escort the people to safety; though initially unsure of Saias's intent, he accepted and entrusted Saias with the Bragi Sword to give to Leif. As Leif's army drew closer, Ced and the Magi successfully seized control of almost the entire city of Munster, with only a portion of the castle remaining under Raydrik's control,[8] and he prepared to personally fend off an incoming attack by a Thracian unit led by Coulter.

In the late stages of this battle he met with Leif for the first time, and the latter thanked him for his efforts in the Munster prison. When Leif lamented his inability to compare to Ced or Seliph, Ced reassured him about his worthiness to the Njörun bloodline, then joined his forces. Ced participated in the final battles against Raydrik and Veld, and later accompanied Leif in joining Seliph's larger liberation army in their campaigns in Thracia and beyond. Soon after, Ced noticed Lewyn staying close to Seliph. He confronted Lewyn about his actions and abandonment of his family, and was enraged by Lewyn's seemingly unconcerned attitude about Erinys and her death.

Following the final battle against Julius in Belhalla, Ced returned to Silesse and was formally crowned as the King of Silesse.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Joining about halfway through the second generation, Ced is a useful combat and support unit for almost any playthrough, regardless of his parentage. As a pre-promoted Sage, his base magic and speed will be decent no matter what. Add in the fact that he always comes with the Pursuit skill to double-attack and the high-might Lightning tome in his inventory and Ced can function right off the bat without any investment at all. The fact that he can also use B-rank staves like Warp and Return is also helpful as he can use them to support the army and gain large sums of experience.

For his choices of fathers, Ced can inherit a number of useful skills or weapons to become even better than he already is. He fortunately does not need Pursuit, so choosing a father that grants other skills like Accost or Critical can be worthwhile.

The classic, most easily attained pairing for Erinys is Lewyn, as they will automatically fall in love midway through Ch. 4 if they are not already married. Lewyn passes down major Forsetti Holy Blood to Ced as well as the Forsetti tome and the Critical skill. With this set-up, Ced becomes a top tier combat unit who can often solo kill entire enemy brigades. However, an argument can be made that since Ced joins later in the game and because Forsetti is somewhat overkill on him, that it is better to save Lewyn for Arthur or Coipre.

Another excellent choice is Noish. Noish's physical statline will leave Ced with lower base magic and a 10% magic growth. As stated previously though, Ced's base magic and Lightning tome still grant him very high attack. Noish's main advantage is that he passes down the Critical and Accost skills, granting Ced the full spectrum of combat skills (Pursuit, Adept, Accost, and Critical). With this setup, Ced can attack up to eight times in a single round of combat, and can score a critical hit on any one of those. Noish is also a great father for Fee for these same reasons, and he is not in as high demand as Lewyn is.

Overall, Ced is a unit that is basically impossible to mess up. He will always be a useful contribution to any player.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Ced is a playable character late in the game, playing a similar role as in Genealogy. In Chapter 23, he will appear as a NPC once a member of the player's party approaches Munster Castle, so long as the boss Alphand has yet to be killed; once Ced's appearance is triggered, he will kill Alphand automatically in a cutscene. Should Ced die before being recruited (unlikely as it is, given his use of Forseti), it is an automatic Game Over. In each playthrough the player is required to choose between taking Ced and Saias to the game's final chapters. If the player recruits Ced, then Saias will leave the party at the end of Chapter 23.

Long prior to Chapter 23, Ced can appear as a NPC on two different occasions (though only once per playthrough). If the player enters the sidequest Chapter 4x, Ced will be present as an unrecruitable NPC who will move around the map's upper half and attack enemies; Karin can talk to him here to receive the Ced Scroll. If Chapter 4x is skipped, Ced will appear in Chapter 6 from turn 5 onward, leading nine Magi reinforcements. Ced and his subordinates will attack Truman's army to buy Leif time to escape, and will leave in turn 9. Karin will not be able to talk to Ced and receive the Ced Scroll in this chapter. In both NPC appearances, Ced's Forseti will have infinite durability, which is not retained when he is recruited later.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ced joins in chapter 23 and the player has the choice between recruiting him and Saias. Ced enters the chapter by killing the boss and destroying the rest of the enemies near said boss. As his introduction shows, Ced is an incredible combat unit with fantastic bases, near mastery of every magic type, A rank in staves, an authority star, 2 Action starts, good growths, a respectable FCM and most notably the Forseti tome. Thanks to the +20 speed Forseti gives, Ced is going to easily double every leftover enemy in Thracia, besides maybe Galzus, and if the enemy somehow survives a round of combat against him he still has adept to fall back on. Another important thing is that the combination of his high skill base, +20 skill gained from Forseti and his 3 FCM he will be getting many critical hits. Overall, Ced is pretty much everything you could want from a unit that joins near the end of the game, being able to carry even the weakest teams to victory if used properly.

In comparison to Saias

Between the two, Ced undoubtedly has better combat, has higher HP which makes it harder for him to get fatigued and is quite a bit more durable than the other one as well. Another thing worth noting is how Saias' one extra point of magic and additional action star matter little as they both offer nearly exact utility. However the biggest advantage Saias holds are his three authority stars which significantly boost your units and the fact that Saias saves you a turn since it takes you one more turn to finish the chapter if the player desires to recruit Ced. Another aspect is that Ced's combat is largely overkill due the low quality of most enemies in Thracia and you also get Galzus soon who has equally godlike combat as Ced. If the player desires to finish the game with the lowest possible turn count, then Saias is the better option, otherwise Ced is better on every other type of playthrough.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Ced is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Genealogy of the Holy War second-generation character set. He is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Lost Bloodlines DLC series.

Personality and character

Ced possesses a strong devotion to the welfare of others, and despite having no stake in the fight for Munster he gave up on his search for his father in order to help the Munster people.[9] Even so, he is exceptionally hard on himself, as despite fighting his best he still considers himself a failure for being unable to save everyone.[10]

Ced is pained by seeing people's suffering. However, he does not believe himself to be better at helping others than the average person.[11] He also does not think he deserves his title, "Hero on the Wind", believing he has not earned it.[12] Ced does not want the burden of "hero" because he doubts he can live up to the title.

Ced believes that he only fought for Munster by circumstance, and that he has failed to stand against the Empire's oppression because he waited too long.[13] Ced compares himself to Seliph and Alfonse, saying that people like them are the true heroes; he claims their resolve is superior to his, and they are more prepared to leap into action than he is.[14] When Alfonse points out that Ced chose under difficult circumstances to stay and help Munster instead of retreating, Ced cannot deny the point.[15]

Ced wants his actions to have meaning and to build a future free of war.[16] Ced believes that anyone can find their way, no matter their origins, and applies this faith to himself as well.[17] However, he remains afraid of having pride, fearing that his mistakes will let other people down.[18]

Genealogy of the Holy War

If Lewyn was his father

In Silesse, which was for a long time under the control of the Empire, Ced, who returned to his country, succeeded to the throne, and devoted himself with all his strength to the reconstruction of the devastated country.
At his side,
His sweetheart, <wife>,
The Pegasus Knight Fee,
Smiled at him, filled with hope.
A beautiful land, and people who loved peace.
The Kingdom of Silesse, which Lewyn protected at the risk of his life, finally came here to completion.

Thracia 776

Ced, Crusader of Wind
Upon returning to Silesse, Ced at last took the throne, as the people had longed for him to do. With his indomitable spirit and tireless work ethic, the war-torn Silesse slowly regained its former beauty.

Trivia

  • In Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, there is a bug with the stat inheritance system which causes certain stats to overflow. This can occur for Ced with two fathers: Lewyn may cause Ced's speed to overflow, and Chulainn may cause Ced's skill to overflow. It is particularly likely to happen with Lewyn, as an overflow will occur with him if he gains any points of speed or if Erinys gains more than two.

  2. "Leif: I'd heard that the Kingdom of Silesse had been overthrown by the Empire. How is it the royal family is still alive?
Karin: The rebels have been keeping them safe. Everyone still willing to fight has gathered in the city of Tófa, where they've rallied around the royal family. Me, I'm gonna become a pegasus knight and lend them my lance.
" — Leif and Karin, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  3. "Lewyn: Hey Ced, you found me out. How've you been?
Ced: Father, you've got some nerve! You have no idea how long I've been looking for you! Do you have any idea how many years have past since you left Silesse!?
Lewyn: Hmm... good question. Hey, how's Erinys doing?
Ced: H, how dare you! Mother is dead!! I wanted her to see you just one last time before she passed away, so I set out to find you.
" — Lewyn and Ced, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  4. "Karin: Silesse faces dire times, milord. Lady Fee can put up a tough front for the others, but when it's just me and her, she... she cries till her eyes dry up. Lord Ced, with respect, you've done her a great cruelty, running away like you did. Lady Fee isn't much more than a kid, and you've gone and forced the burden of ruling Silesse onto her. That holy blood in your veins has gone to your head! You're the heir to Forseti's legacy, good for you, but you up and walked out on your mother and sister! Does that sound like what a hero would do? Does that even sound like what a real prince would do?!
Ced: Karin, I... You're right, of course, but... But Father was the only one who could cure Mother's illness! I couldn't do her any good just waiting at her side! Was I supposed to just sit there and watch her waste away?! So I... I went to find Father, by whatever means I could.
" — Karin and Ced, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  5. "Karin: Then why are you leading some rebel group in Munster?!
Ced: I heard tell that my father had been here in Munster until half a year ago. I came here to pick up the trail, but it had gone cold. As I investigated, I discovered just how deeply the people of Munster suffered. I couldn't abandon them as my father had abandoned Silesse.
" — Karin and Ced, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  6. "'Fore he showed up, the Magi had been all but wiped out by the Empire... Then he showed up, an' just look at how the Magi are doin' now. The Empire keeps tryin' to grab hold of 'em, but they just keep lucking out. More'n luck, maybe. That's why Sir Ced's a man worth believin' in. Can't go wrong with a fella like that." — A prisoner, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  7. "There, emboldened by news of Leif's victory, the citizens seized the opportunity to flee. However, they were caught in the crossfire of two forces: the Magi, led by Ced, who were trying to defend the civilians, and the Knights of Munster, who were determined to stop them." — Opening narration of Chapter 23, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  8. "I am Ced of the Magi. We've taken control of the city, save for one wing of the castle. Surrender now and I'll spare your life." — Ced, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  9. "Fee: I'm here looking for you! What could I do... You never once returned home after you left!
Ced: I'm sorry, Fee. I wandered into Munster while looking for our father, and the people were so bad off I just couldn't leave them.
Fee: That's just like something you'd do, Ced.
" — Fee and Ced, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  10. "Munster had a great number of children seized and sent to the shrine in Miletos. I was unable to prevent it... I'm no hero, sir. I'm a coward if anything." — Ced, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  11. "It pains me to see the defenseless in anguish, but the truth is I am as helpless as anyone." — Ced to Alfonse, Fire Emblem Heroes
  12. "Alfonse: The tale of your valor is well-known here in Askr, Ced. Unable to turn from those in need, you stood against a powerful foe. They call you the Hero on the Wind.
Ced: A lofty moniker like that does not suit me. I am no hero.
Alfonse: From what I've heard of your deeds, you more than earned it.
Ced: I have earned no more than any of those who suffered in that tragedy. And if I had, I would discard it. A title like that is too heavy a burden.
" — Ced and Alfonse, Fire Emblem Heroes
  13. "Ced: It is true that I once fought for the people of Munster. But that was more a matter of circumstance than anything else. Their plight was not what brought me there. I had only been searching for my missing father.
Alfonse: Are you suggesting that your heroic story was merely the result of a coincidence?
Ced: A true hero would have set out to end the Empire's oppression from the very beginning. If I had done that, then many children would have been saved from anguish and imprisonment. I failed them.
" — Ced and Alfonse, Fire Emblem Heroes
  14. "Heroes like Lord Seliph possess an unshakeable resolve to defend those who cannot defend themselves. Someone like that would have done right by those people from the start. Someone like you, Prince Alfonse. You have a far greater right to the title of hero than I ever will." — Ced to Alfonse, Fire Emblem Heroes
  15. "Alfonse: You could have fled, couldn't you? Taken the easy way out?
Ced: That is a fair point. Yes, I could have.
" — Ced and Alfonse, Fire Emblem Heroes
  16. "I hope to make my presence in this world meaningful. We are not helpless to work together, and together I believe we will see a future that is free of war." — Ced, Fire Emblem Heroes
  17. "I may be as helpless as anyone else, but I believe even the most ordinary person can find a path forward." — Ced, Fire Emblem Heroes
  18. "I will walk my path carefully, without pride, as though treading on thin ice." — Ced, Fire Emblem Heroes
