Cancel, also known as Guard, (Japanese: キャンセル Cancel) is a combat skill which first appeared in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. In Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, it is a personal skill equippable to any unit that, when activated, gives successful hits by its user the added ability of completely preventing the enemy from counter-attacking or double attacking them afterward for the rest of the round of combat, temporarily protecting the user from the risk of being damaged by the enemy.

In Heroes, Guard is a three-tiered type B passive skill (whose individual tiers are known as Guard 1, Guard 2, and Guard 3 in order from lowest to highest), and is a skill that slows down the target's cooldown for special skills when the user's HP is at or above a certain threshold at the start of combat; the percentage of total HP required to activate the skill decreases with the skill's tier. It should be noted, however, that despite Guard's help description, its actual effect in practice is that it merely pauses the target's special cooldown counter. This is due to the fact that the special cooldown counter always counts down by 1 when the unit is either hit, or performs an attack, and Guard does not nullify this; as a result, this charge is merely canceled out by Guard, resulting in no actual change to the target's cooldown counter. As a result, Guard will not prevent a special skill from being activated if the target's special cooldown is already at 0 at the start of a battle.

  • In Heroes, the choice to revert the skill's name to Guard may be related to it being added to the game in the Path of Radiance-themed World of Radiance update.
