Bartre (Japanese: バアトル Bartr) is a character from The Binding Blade and The Blazing Blade.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Bartre appears as an ally in Chapter 11B, and can be recruited by having him talk to Fir or Roy. Fir was trying to better herself as a swordmaster like, her mother, Karla. Worried for the safety of his daughter, to the discomfort of Fir, Bartre joins Roy's army.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Bartre joins halfway through The Binding Blade as a Warrior with enormous strength. His stats are good enough to contribute from the get-go. With A-rank axes, Bartre can use almost every axe in the game at base level. A D-rank in bows allows him to use Steel Bows and the Longbow.
Bartre's disadvantage is his low speed. While he is fast enough to avoid getting doubled by most enemies, some will double him still. He is also unable to double all but the slowest enemies, so if he does not kill in one hit, he needs more than one round. Most units in The Binding Blade cannot one-round, and Bartre is more durable than most thanks to high HP. For that reason, he is still good at combat. That said, his high strength would be much more useful if he could also double.
Bartre can deal effective damage against enemy Pegasus Knights and Wyvern Riders. This is useful in several maps, since enemy fliers become more common over time. That said, Bartre cannot use powerful bows like the Killer Bow and the Silver Bow. His hitrates can also be unreliable, although his skill stat is not terrible.
In Hard Mode, Bartre is unable to one-shot more powerful enemy fliers. Since he definitely never doubles there, his usefulness dwindles. Still, thanks to solid base stats and survivability, he can be a filler unit. Not requiring any training is one of Bartre's greatest boons, especially in Hard Mode. When experience gain is slower, units who need no training to be good are very valuable.
Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
Role
Bartre appears with Dorcas in Chapter 11 in Eliwood's Tale, and Chapter 12 in Hector's Tale. Coming out of a nearby village after being told that Lord Eliwood was passing through. Realizing the Eliwood's small army, may need help fighting off the bandits, Bartre and Dorcas join the fight.
Later, in Hector's Chapter 31x. He once again meets, the sword-wielding woman that knocked him out at the Western Isles, Karla. Seeking revenge Bartre challenges Karla to battle. Karla luckily agrees to a battle at the arena. After the fact, when Karla asks how he got stronger, he explains that he has been traveling with Eliwood's army. Karla joins the army, hearing this information. Karla and Bartre later wed, thus having Fir at some point. Unfortunately, Karla's time with Bartre would be cut short by an illness.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Bartre joins alongside Dorcas in chapter 1 of Eliwood mode, or chapter 2 of Hector mode. Assuming the player went through Lyn mode, Dorcas will already have a significant edge against Bartre, having had some time to grow provided the player used him. That said, on his own merits, Bartre is generally mediocre.
Bartre's base strength is 9. This allows him to dish out decent earlygame damage, especially against sturdy units like cavaliers or knights, who happen to wield lances most of the time (all the time in the case of a knight). He also wields axes, a powerful weapon type that has easy access to 1-2 range combat. Unfortunately, Bartre's defense and resistance are low, having a base of 4 and 0 and a growth of 30% and 25%, respectively, so his staying power at the front-lines are rather limited.
However, Bartre's biggest weakness is his horrible base speed of 3, even for the standards of his character class. For starters, since you need 4 more AS than your enemy to double them, Bartre cannot even double Soldiers at base (they're not troublesome to eliminate, but even Oswin, an armor knight, can still double them), or knights, despite their naturally low speed. What makes this issue even worse is the speed of regular enemies on Hard Mode. Cavaliers tend to have around 7 to 9 speed, making them dangerous to Bartre, and further hampering him is his constitution of 12. It doesn't sound that bad on paper as it allows him to wield hand most axes without a significant speed penalty, but it comes into play when Bartre needs to use a Steel Axe in a specific situation. Not only will his hitrate be low, but if he misses, he will take heavy damage back by way of the enemy doubling him. Despite his speed growth being better than Dorcas (by Fighter standards), the latter still has a base of 6, while it's not great, it can still at least allow him to double a few enemies in the earlygame and can at least stop him from getting doubled by every enemy except Mercenaries and Myrmidons. Even then Bartre's otherwise decent speed growth isn't exactly reliable at all times and you might as well not get speed for quite a couple levels. Every level up without speed requires you to put 100 Exp into him, and you need multiple speed level-ups to even have a decent speed stat. Bartre will just end up not killing anything unless you setup kills for him, considerably slowing your gameplay down. Simply put, Bartre is not a unit worth using. Geitz is a promoted Warrior who can do his job ten times better (albeit requiring more effort to actually get to his recruitment chapter), with ten more points of base speed and a decent growth in it. Then again, it's also an option to simply not use a warrior at all.
For all of Bartre's flaws in regards to his performance, using and training him is required to recruit Karla in Hector mode. Despite Karla being considered a mediocre unit, her bases are still decent for the next chapter, "Victory or Death", and she also comes with a Wo Dao, one of the only two in the game. Keep in mind that to recruit her, Bartre has to be a level 5 Warrior. You might as well Arena abuse him and early promote him if you really wanna use him just to get access to Karla.

Trivia
- Oddly, Bartre's ending in The Blazing Blade specifies that he joins Karla in death after taking Fir to her uncle, when he lives on to star in The Binding Blade. Bartre "joining" Karla is not said or implied in the Japanese version and is a translation error.[1]
- Bartre has an unused in Fire Emblem Awakening, possibly indicating he was a planned SpotPass character.
- In Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Bartre's growths are identical to Dozla's from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.
