Aelfric presents a front of being a calm and forgiving benefactor to the denizens of Abyss. In reality, he is completely obsessed with reviving Sitri, and sees the Ashen Wolves as pawns to this end. Despite this, he is not entirely without virtue; he truly loved Sitri and was perfectly willing to step aside and allow her to be with Jeralt if it made her happy, and he founded the Ashen Wolves several years before he discovered Sitri's body, leading Yuri to speculate that his intentions for the Wolves were initially genuinely pure. | Aelfric presents a front of being a calm and forgiving benefactor to the denizens of Abyss. |blurb1=There’s a place below Garreg Mach Monastery called Abyss, where people forced out from the world aboveground gather. While theirs might be a hidden society, they haven’t been completely left to fend for themselves—they have Aelfric, a cardinal of the Church of Seiros, to look out for them! | |||
|blurb2=Compared to the monastery above, Abyss is a dirty and dangerous place to call home. Aelfric tirelessly takes it upon himself to improve Abyss and listen to the voices of its people. | |||
|blurb3=Abyss is also home to some students who were forced out of the Officers Academy. It was Aelfric who took them under his wing to form the Ashen Wolves, an unofficial house of the Academy! | |||
|blurb4=Many disadvantaged people look to Aelfric for support and guidance. But still, despite his popularity, he occasionally seems a little lonely and disheartened… I hope he can find some time to take a break from helping others and take care of himself for a change! | |||

“ | The Ashen Wolves are a house in name alone. They are eager students with no teacher to guide them... If you could find it in your heart to take them under your wing, I would be most grateful. | ” | — Aelfric, to Byleth. |
---|
Aelfric Dahlman[1] (pronounced /ˈɛlfɹɪk/[key]; Japanese: アルファルド=ダールマン Alphard Dahlman) is a temporary playable character and final boss appearing in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses expansion Cindered Shadows, as well a minor NPC in the main story. He is the overseer of Abyss and an old friend of Byleth's parents, Jeralt and Sitri.
Biography
Aelfric was born in Garreg Mach Monastery, and fell in love with a nun named Sitri. However, Sitri fell in love with the captain of the Knights of Seiros, Jeralt, and died giving birth to her child Byleth. 6 years after her death, Aelfric founded the Ashen Wolves, a student group dedicated to protecting lost souls who ended up in the monastery's underground city, Abyss. 5 years later, he discovered Sitri's corpse buried deep within Abyss. Having knowledge of legends surrounding the Chalice of Beginnings, an artifact created by Saint Seiros that could supposedly resurrect the dead in a ritual called the Rite of Rising, he became obsessed with finding a way to bring Sitri back to life. To this end, he lured crestbearers of the Four Apostles, Yuri, Constance, Hapi, and Balthus, to Abyss to be used as blood sacrifices in the Rite of Rising. He also abducted many of Yuri's friends and family members to force him into giving his allegiance.
Cindered Shadows
Aelfric first meets Byleth as an adult when they and a group of students blunder into Abyss and discover the Ashen Wolves. Through Yuri, Aelfric manipulates the group into seeking the Chalice of Beginnings. The group finds the chalice, but Aelfric is supposedly abducted by bandits led by Metodey. Byleth and the Ashen Wolves rescue him and drive off the bandits. Aelfric then betrays the Wolves, steals the Chalice, abducts them, and takes them to the Holy Mausoleum to complete the ritual. Byleth and their companions pursue them to the Mausoleum, rescue the Wolves, and defeat Aelfric. Rhea tries to convince him to stand down, but Aelfric flees to the cathedral and attempts to finish the ritual with his own blood. The ritual fails catastrophically; Aelfric and Sitri's corpse are absorbed by the Chalice and transformed into a horrific monster called an Umbral Beast, and Byleth is forced to slay him in battle.
Main Story
In the game's main storylines, Aelfric was expelled from the Church of Seiros due to an unidentified scandal,[3] being implied the Church, in contrast to Cindered Shadows, quickly caught up with his plan and promptly removed him from his position.[4] He makes an unnamed cameo appearance shortly before the Battle of the Eagle and Lion in Garreg Mach, where he asks Byleth to lay some flowers on Sitri's grave for him before leaving to parts unknown.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Role
Aelfric is introduced as an NPC during the Cindered Shadows expansion, before being revealed to be the main antagonist. He is a temporary playable character in Chapter 5, a boss in Chapter 6, and the final boss in Chapter 7.
In the main storyline, after purchasing the DLC pass, he is mentioned in dialogue in Abyss and makes a brief appearance in Chapter 7 as a non-playable character under the name "Monk", where he gives a quest.

Personality
Aelfric presents a front of being a calm and forgiving benefactor to the denizens of Abyss. In reality, he is completely obsessed with reviving Sitri, and sees the Ashen Wolves as pawns to this end. Despite this, he is not entirely without virtue; he truly loved Sitri and was perfectly willing to step aside and allow her to be with Jeralt if it made her happy, and he founded the Ashen Wolves several years before he discovered Sitri's body, leading Yuri to speculate that his intentions for the Wolves were initially genuinely pure.

- ↑ "The side story is essentially a “parallel world,” isn’t it?
Kusakihara: It’s hard to say that that’s exactly the case. I don’t think it’s completely isolated from the main story, and I think for Yuri and the others those events did actually occur. When you meet the Ashen Wolves in the main game, they treat you as if they’re meeting you for the first time. That being said, it’s assumed that the events of Cindered Shadows have already been resolved. I think Cindered Shadows is essentially how the protagonist would’ve resolved the conflict had they been there." — Nintendo Dream May 2020 Issue, translated by Nintendo Everything, Published: April 11, 2020, Retrieved: September 16, 2021
