Back at the Liberation Army's camp, Izuka outlines his next strategy. Before he can do so, he informs them that Pelleas will not be appearing with him any further and that he will speak on his behalf, which Micaiah objects to. Izuka plans to strike Umono's prison camp by poisoning a nearby lake and waiting for the enemy soldiers to die. Micaiah once again objects, stating she will not allow such vile tactics. Sothe also informs him that the poison would very likely also kill the prisoners they wish to rescue. Exasperated, Izuka leaves the army to their own devices. Micaiah then begins to put forth her strategy to Tauroneo.
At the Umono Prison Camp, Djur, a Begnion commander, and his soldiers receive news of the Liberation Army's arrival, and Djur orders a soldier to defend outside. Micaiah and Sothe then arrive, and it is revealed that Tauroneo was stationed to distract the guards outside so fewer would be present inside the camp. The Liberation Army then begins their mission.
During the mission, Tormod, Muarim, and Vika break into the prison to aid Sothe. Sothe recognizes him, as does Jill. Muarim and Vika transform, terrifying a Begnion soldier. Some reinforcements appear to calm him down and deal with the group, though Tormod kills one of them.
After the mission, Izuka demands to know who the three are, and Sothe introduces them as his acquaintances from Begnion. He also worries that the presence of more laguz would result in backlash of some sort. Pelleas appears to be compliant to Izuka as well. Afterwards, Sothe speaks with Tormod, asking him how he arrived so soon. Tormod reveals to Micaiah that he was investigating whether the apostle knew about the events in Daein, and traced the occupying army's actions to a select few senators in Begnion. Micaiah later finds some time away from the two, and begins musing about how Sothe has been acting, noting how she raised him when he was young. Muarim, who is also present, warns her that such statements would reveal her true nature.
Beginning log
The Liberation Army's sweeping victory seems to signal a turn in the war for Daein. However, General Jarod uses his superior numbers to harry the group and threaten their fragile momentum. Begnion has fortified its army with weapons and supplies bought with funds stolen from Daein. Begnion has also purchased the swords of a vast number of mercenaries from these same stolen funds. The Liberation Army does not want for willing fighters of its own. However, most are old men and inexperienced boys whose passion far outstrips their skill. The Liberation Army has no choice: it must bolster its ranks if it is to meet Begnion on equal terms. Its only hope lies locked in Begnion's prison camps, where Daein's former soldiers await their rescue.
