The Cleric class, known as Priests, Sisters, or Shamans in the Japanese games, are a staff-wielding class that has appeared in all of the Fire Emblem games to date, in many different incarnations. Usually, it is a basic class that can only wield staves. In later games, in which it is separate from the Priest class, all clerics are female.

In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, a class similar to the modern Cleric called a Priest (そうりょ, Souryo) appeared. Then, in Fire Emblem Gaiden and Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, the Sister (シスター, Shisutaa) class appeared, which could only use staves. In Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, the first Priest class appeared again, but the Sister was replaced with the Shaman (シャーマン, Shaaman) class, which could use staves and light. In Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, the Priest appeared again, and this class was again named Sister, but could also use fire, thunder, and wind magic. These were all female-only, except for in Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi and the Priests of Seisen no Keifu and Thracia 776.

In Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, both classes were merged into the Priest (僧侶, Souryo) class again, only using staves. Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade had the female Sister (シスター, Shisuta) class again, translated to Cleric from then on. In Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, a standard was set with the male Priest (神官, Shinkan, also meaning "priest"; note the different kanji) class and the female Sister class. This was the same with Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, except the Cleric class was actually named "Cleric" in Japanese (クレリック, Kurerikku). In Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, this became the Priest (神官, Shinkan) class, while the "Staff User" (杖使い, Tsue Tsukai) which could use staves and swords, was translated to Cleric. Finally, in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, the male Priest (僧侶, Souryo) and the female Sister appeared again, translated to Curate and Cleric respectively.

Clerics and all of their other incarnations usually cannot attack enemies, and are defenseless if left exposed to the enemy. They often have high luck and speed, which helps them dodge attacks, and high resistance, which guards against magical attacks. However, their low defense and the fact that they cannot counterattack makes them very vulnerable to enemies. They should be protected by fighting units to prevent their deaths.

Clerics change class to bishops in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem; both curates and clerics do become bishops in the latter two games. In Fire Emblem Gaiden they change class to saints. In Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, shamans/sisters became sages and priests became high priests. In Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, they can choose to change class to bishops or valkyries. Finally, in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, priests become bishops; clerics become valkyries.
