“ | She won't be the only one to die. You. Me. Every single person in Daein. We'll all die. And it's all my fault. | ” | — Pelleas |

The Price (Japanese: 生きてこそ You have to live) is the twelfth chapter of Part III of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. In this chapter, Pelleas reveals the reason Daein is fighting for Begnion—a blood pact—and Micaiah launches an attack against Sanaki in order to give Pelleas time to find a way to free themselves from it.

Micaiah rests in camp, having fallen from exhaustion in the battle prior, and is being taken care of by Sothe and Tauroneo. Pelleas and Almedha enter, and the former apologizes for putting her through such stress. As he continues to speak of their mission to eliminate the laguz, Sothe becomes fed up and threatens to leave along with Micaiah. Pelleas begs them to stay, and reveals the truth of why they are fighting: the blood pact. Because he signed one after his coronation, the people of Daein will be fated to die if they do not follow the wishes of Begnion—i.e., to eliminate the laguz.
A flashback is shown, depicting Lekain meeting up with Pelleas in private, arriving instantly with a rewarp staff. During the meeting, Pelleas attempts to avoid fighting the war so he can rebuild Daein, but Lekain reveals to him that the supposed treaty Pelleas signed was in fact a blood pact. He also explains that Izuka was working for them to find the perfect king to execute Begnion's will—Pelleas himself. Lekain then tells a story of a different king who signed a blood pact in the past. When the king broke the terms of the pact, the people of his kingdom started dying at an increasing rate, until half of his kingdom died, when he pleaded with Begnion to lift the curse. Lekain declares that Pelleas has no option but to follow their will, and that, if they were to seek outside help, their network of spies would find out instantly.
The flashback ends, and Almedha then asks Pelleas to show her the mark of the blood pact. Sothe continues to doubt Pelleas's claims and threatens to leave, but Micaiah reaffirms Pelleas. When Sothe offers that she stay behind and not fight, Micaiah refuses, unwilling to abandon the people of Daein. Pelleas apologizes to them all once again. Tauroneo notes that many of Daein's citizens will die whether they obey the blood pact or not, as they are currently only being treated as pawns by Begnion. Micaiah refuses to give up, however, and asks Pelleas to use the vast resources of Daein to find a way out of the blood pact, urging her not to give up either. She plans for them to attack the empress's forces to put up a show of obedience, so that they can buy time for Pelleas to do his research.
The Daein army marches off to the country's mountainside, where they find Sanaki's forces trying to use it to avoid a head-on battle. Though it seems clear that they do not intend to fight Daein, Micaiah still commands the soldiers to prepare boulders to drop on them. Having distracted Ike's forces with a decoy, Micaiah commands the army to begin their assault on Sanaki. Sothe and Tauroneo ask her to reconsider, yet she refuses, believing that holding back will make the senate question them sooner. She clarifies that she only intends to drag out the battle to give Pelleas time, and the two decide to support her plan. The army then begins their prolonged assault on the apostle's army. As they are being attacked, Sigrun sends a soldier off to notify Ike.
After holding the Holy Guards off for long enough, Micaiah's forces return to their positions atop the cliffs. As she receives news that Ike and the Laguz Alliance are headed their way, Micaiah gives the command to drop oil down the cliff onto Sanaki's forces. Seeing the potential danger of being set aflame, Sigrun brings Sanaki onto her pegasus and flies to safety. Before the archers can shoot them down, Tibarn swoops in and grabs Sothe, hanging him over the cliff. Micaiah then orders her forces to cease fire to keep Sothe safe. Ike then arrives with Ranulf and delivers her an ultimatum: to surrender and return to Daein, or to fight him and die. Due to the blood pact, Micaiah cannot negotiate or retreat, eliciting confusion from Ranulf. Sanaki, sick of the bloodshed, orders the army to cease fighting for the day, and to retreat. Tibarn then drops Sothe off the cliff, though he is saved by another hawk. Ike then speaks to Tauroneo briefly, and the apostle's army retreats.
Back at camp, Ike receives a report of the battle from Soren; most of the Begnion Central Army and Crimean Royal Knights have been destroyed, and the oil poured on the pegasi have effectively grounded them. When Sanaki mentions Micaiah, Rafiel overhears, confused. Ike, worried about the medallion, asks Rafiel about its safety. Rafiel replies that he and the other herons brought it with them, and that its power—the dark god sealed within—may not be able to be held down by galdrar anymore. Over in Daein Keep, Almedha speaks through a sending stone, pleading for someone to keep her son safe. In the library of the keep, Pelleas finally discovers the key to ending the blood pact. Elsewhere, the dragon prince Kurthnaga receives Almedha's message in secret.
In Begnion, several guards fail to keep back a mysterious invader from their prisons. The visitor meets a prisoner, and informs them of Sanaki's escape and exposing of the senate's corruption. The prisoner, Sephiran, asks the visitor, Zelgius, to free him, and he obliges.
Beginning log
Apostle Sanaki's army, with Ike at its head, wins a great victory over Daein at Oribes Bridge. However, Apostle Sanaki elects not to pursue the retreating Daein forces. Instead, she petitions King Pelleas for permission to pass through Daein. After waiting for several days, she receives no reply, and Sanaki reluctantly orders a march. Avoiding the heart of Daein, the army skirts along the mountains and makes its way south.
